Putting cash down at start of cruise?

Recommended Posts

Thanks but just wanted to confirm. I can purchase obc via my credit card and it sits there waiting for me to show up to withdraw it during the cruise, with no service charge?

Correct. It is also refundable OBC, so if you don't use all of it, you can get a cash refund on the last night, or they will credit it back to your credit card.

wow, thanks! it's a wonder more don't do this. points on my credit card, no service charges and I don't have to carry casino cash around with me....awesome!!

I may have misunderstood your earlier question.

If you take cash out of your account at the casino, they do charge 5%.

However, if you use the OBC for other ship charges (excursions, drinks, shops, etc.) there is no service charge.

Wheeling Family: There is no problem putting cash down, but you don't have to do it all upfront. We opted for a cash account on our cruise this past May for the the first time, so we had a lot of questions.

When you check in at the pier, you can just tell them you are doing a cash account, and they won't take your debit card. They told us we could check our balances on the TV (Sorry, I don't remember what ship you are sailing on) and could just drop by guest services and pay as we went along.

We did in fact end up with about $80 credit, which we got the last night of the cruise without any problem.

Good luck to you and enjoy your cruise -- it's coming up!!!

Ann

Can I not get access to the cash at the front desk then use it at the casino?

We will never leave without credit cards. Our last experience on a cruise this summer made us a firm believer. Our flight was delayed because Obama was going to land so they froze up the airport. this made us miss our connecting flight to England. We were rerouted to Germany and then to England. Buy this time our ship was sailing and would be 2 days before it's first port. Even though we had insurance we had to pay up front. We needed a hotel that night in England, a flight the next day to coppenhagen and a hotel. also meals and transportation. It is something you do not think about. another cruise 6 months before we had my mother with us in Canada. She became ill and we had to get off the ship. She was in the hospital 1 week before she passed away. Hotel, meals, rental car and a flight back home. You really need a credit card for emergencies.

Maybe you could buy a visa gift card with cash before the trip and use that. I know you can order online, obviously then you couldn't use cash, maybe paypal?

If you have OBC alloted to your Seapass then setup your account as a cash account when you check in. This will alow you to withdraw cash without the service chargeat the casino. YES i have done this. Evan if you do not have OBC prior to cruising you can setup your account as a cash account and still receive cash without the service charge. Once you reach $500 you go CS and pay it down with cash or credit card. On the last day I go down and secure my account with a credit card for finally night charges.

I learn this from a couple of pinacle members.

I know this is a little off topic, but how do you cruise without a credit card? God forbid someone gets sick or injured while you are out of the United States. They are not going to treat you for free and require payment.

Even if you have a travel policy that covers medical expenses, you still need to lay it out and then make a claim.

I have one credit card with a 30K limit that I always bring along with me when I cruise. I use the card once a year to buy a gallon of milk so they don't cancel it due to inactivity. But its nice to know I have the ability to pay if necessary.

Contrary to the conclusions reached by some, I don't find your post to be a judgment at all nor does it lack respect for the choice of others. It is a very reasonable description of the potential need for having a credit card while traveling, even if the intent is not to use it. It may be accepted or rejected by others, but it seems to be a well-intentioned consideration.
