to rome by train

Difficult to ascertain. It depends if the ship docks early, the officials get cleared quickly and how long you have to wait for the shuttle to fill to take you to the gate. Then it depends on how quickly you walk to the station. San Pietro station is one of the first when you reach Rome and the Vatican is only a 5 to 10 minute walk. The train timetables are quite easy to find online. Hope this helps.

First, which are you trying to get to, St. Peter's basilica or the Vatican Museums?

If you are on a regional train you'd use the Roma San Pietro stop rather than travel all the way to Termini. You'd only use Termini if you are on an express train. Note, however, that if you choose an express train you cannot use the BIRG ticket.

The BIRG is a ticket that covers both your regional train fare between Civitavecchia and Rome as well as all mass transit (buses, trams, and metro) in Rome for the entire day. This ticket currently costs 12 Euro.

Most of the time at Civitavecchia you need to use the port shuttle to get from your ship to the port gate. Occasionally there are ships that berth close enough in to walk but you can't count on that.

So, assuming you dock on time and are able to disembark fairly quickly, and that the shuttle is there and fills quickly, you could theoretically be at the port gate by 9:30. It's a 10 - 15 minute walk (one half mile) from the port gate to the Civitavecchia rail station.

Using the current weekday schedule, that means the first train you can catch is the 9:44 which arrives at Roma S. Pietro at 10:27. From the S. Pietro station to St. Peter's basilica is one half mile, or another 10 - 15 minutes. The entrance of the Vatican museums is 1.2 miles from the train station; therefore, you might be able to make an 11 AM entrance if you hustle.

how long to get from civitaveccia to termini in rome. we're docking at 9am would we be able to get to vatican city by 11 am?

I just did it in October. It was 75 minutes to Termini on the regular commuter train. If you're going to the Vatican you should get off earlier than Termini. Refer to the stops on the schedule.
