SailorInaPastLife Posted December 18, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2013 I was on the Thanksgiving week sailing of the Spendor. This was my second cruise with Carnival and we hit rough weather on the trip south. On the first full day my sister and I were enjoying a nice stroll Deck 4, the muster deck, when we were told that passengers are not allowed on the deck. I remembered the muster deck on the Victory was also closed to passengers. We looked at the Carnival Magic in Nassau and saw lots of passengers using the muster deck. Why does Carnival deny access to its muster decks? On the Splendor Deck 3 the promenade deck is slippery when wet. It was also used as the exit deck in two ports which meant one side was blocked off; and on the nicest walking day had workman blocking each side. Deck 4 is more sheltered and can be used to walk around the ship because of doors to the inside at each end of the ship. I checked the deck plans when we got home. The plans show open deck which looks like it should be open to passengers.
firemanbobswife Posted December 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 18, 2013 The only time I have experienced those decks being closed were when there were high winds, or they were refueling on that side. Other than that, they have always been open.
CruiseAwesome Posted December 18, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 18, 2013 Same here, I've never had them closed off except for maintenance stuff on the deck/lifeboats or because of high wind.
winddawn Posted December 19, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 19, 2013 And sometimes they might close part of a deck when the crew is practicing safety training on port days....or maybe for maintenance such as welding where they want to protect passengers from walking through an area where they might be injured during the work. I don't really understand what you mean by "the muster deck." Several decks can have designated muster stations mostly based on passenger cabin assignment. Ehpride Posted December 19, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 19, 2013 The only time I've ever seen the deck closed is due to high winds. Most of the time, I never see anybody out there though.
Colorado Kat Posted December 19, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 19, 2013 I like to walk, and wander about the ship. I've never had the lower decks put off-limits, unless they were doing maintenance.
vacruizer Posted December 19, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 19, 2013 On Conquest class ships at least, deck 4 is the muster station deck and is closed off after sailing. Deck 3 would be the public outdoor deck. I've always assumed it's to keep people from messing with the lifeboats and supply boxes out there. All it would take would be some drunks or bored teenagers messing with stuff or trying to climb into a lifeboat and you'd have issues. Back when Carnival did the Susan G. Komen walk on each sailing, it was sometimes held on that deck if winds were too high up on the jogging track.

Cruised on the Destiny, Victory, Conquest, Glory, Dream and Freedom and once the muster drill was over, Deck 4 was not accessable to passengers. You can walk under the lifeboats on Deck 3 but not by them on Deck 4. If I'm not mistaken, the doors leading out to Deck 4 say "Emergency Exit Only" on them. PortSideCruzan Posted December 19, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 19, 2013 Hi SailorInapastlife :) As another member has mentioned, muster deck four aboard the Splendor is off limits to passengers after the drill due to many safety concerns in regards to the lifeboats, supply boxes and other things a passenger can get hurt on, damage, or put other passengers at risk by tampering with something on that deck. :)

About three days later walked by the door and looked out and people were out their and both sides were filled with chairs. I would go out their everyday and relax. Not a lot of people new it was open and you could have some good down time on the long sea days coming across the pond
