kylenyc Posted January 26, 2014 Author #104 Share Posted January 26, 2014 Jumping ahead to today... Day 14 - Sunday, January 26, 2014 The Beautiful New Norwegian Getaway Arrives in New York City Ben greets the new Norwegian Getaway as she arrives in frigid New York City (21 F with 8 F wind chill) after a balmy transatlantic crossing. Two minutes posing for pictures and our friendly figurine's flexibility felt frozen as did his fotog's fingers. He felt sorry for some poor souls ?waiting for their tour bus? across from Pier 88. Meanwhile, all passengers catching taxis and airport transfers did so inside the somewhat warmer terminal. Met his friend Yemi who made the TA crossing. Dropped her off in SOHO for a little shopping while Ben's typist takes shelter in Starbucks.. Ben's poses in the frigid 8 F wind chill for a photo op in his matching skintight artic thermal jumpsuit... :D Pier 88 Manhattan Cruise Terminal ?Waiting for their non-NCL tour bus/connection? Meanwhile, passengers were directed to taxi and airport transfers inside the terminal

kikki21 Posted January 27, 2014 #107 Share Posted January 27, 2014 I do love the Miami vibe on the Getaway - quite possibly because i love Miami - we're hoping to get away - ha ha - in December this year and it's a toss up between the Getaway and the Celebrity Reflection - both ships I want to try at some point! :) as I also love the look of the Solstice class ships. We have to wait till next year GRRR! but at least 2015 should see us a bit spoilt for trying out new ships from the UK! :)
KT47 Posted January 27, 2014 #108 Share Posted January 27, 2014 We were onboard on the 15th for the one night out of Southampton. Noticed a bit of "swaying"!! How did she handle the Atlantic crossing?? Was it stable or a bit of a Rock n Roll crossing? Loved the blog & photos, thanks for posting.
thephillykid Posted January 27, 2014 #109 Share Posted January 27, 2014 Great blog so far!!! These 60 + days waiting to board are going to drag out until we get a chance to explore her as well. We can't wait for more details. Keep them coming. How was the food in the mdr compared to the specialty restaurants? How smoky was the 678?...the rest of the ship? How busy was the casino? What were the table minimums? Thanks for the details. Howard

kylenyc Posted January 28, 2014 Author #114 Share Posted January 28, 2014 Thanks stsbj, CruiseGirlKS! Kyle/Ben Thank you for all the great pics and information on the Getaway? Marilyn and I remember all the fun we had with you on the Gem? I hope we meet again one day soon! Thanks! The February Gem was so much fun! Hope to sail with again too some day! Thanks for posting Ben. Once again you have done a great job. Please give your typist/porter/butler a pat on the back for all of his help. Thanks! "Please don't encourage or feed the butler." Otherwise Ben might have to start paying him. :p Thanks for posting Ben. Once again you have done a great job. Please give your typist/porter/butler a pat on the back for all of his help. Didn't do the transatlantic. Only did two days out of Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Southampton, England. However, from my friend's account, she said it was a mostly smooth sailing with a few rocky days which she felt more than most because she was in a forward ocean view. There are a few threads in the main forum about the transatlantic coming in. Great blog so far!!!These 60 + days waiting to board are going to drag out until we get a chance to explore her as well. We can't wait for more details. Keep them coming. How was the food in the mdr compared to the specialty restaurants? How smoky was the 678?...the rest of the ship? How busy was the casino? What were the table minimums? Thanks for the details. Howard Food - I only had lunch in the MDR and it was very good. Getaway introduced new dishes and better desserts. The parfait was sublime and if NCL keeps it up they'll outdo desserts on Carnival and Princess that I've had. I do hope the improvements will go fleetwide. Ocean Blue also introduced some new dishes (lobster risotto was fantastic) but I heard they were specifically for Getaway and Miami. Smoke - On 678 Ocean Place, I did not notice any problems with smoke(nor on the Breakway) except inside the smoking section of the casino itself where it's allowed. On Breakaway, I noticed smoke drifting from the smoking to the non-smoking section of the casino adjacent Shanghai's and Bar 21. However, I didn't have occasion to see if the situation has changed any on Getaway. The situation in the Waterfront has improved. I noticed a change that smoking is no longer allowed near Sunset Bar entrance (Maltings on Breakaway). Note smoking has never been allowed sitting at the bars themselves. The bar staff now direct smokers to the designated smoking tables in front of Grammy Experience/Fat Cats for instance or into the Humidor cigar bar. I didn't spend much time in the casinos. Besides, the maiden sailings wouldn't be a good indicator because I was only aboard for two days. Neither will reports from the transatlantic because my understanding was she was only at 1/3 to 1/4 capacity. Transatlantic in the winter isn't exactly a popular sailing. Hopefully you'll get better answers from her inaugural sailings out of NY and Miami.

kylenyc Posted January 28, 2014 Author #123 Share Posted January 28, 2014 Day 1 - Monday morning, January 13, 2014 Norwegian Getaway Maiden Voyage - 1-Day Escape from Rotterdam Some foodie picks from lunch in the main dining room on Day 1 and Day 2. Ben gave into his serf's moaning and groaning for some needed lunch nourishment. He was pleasantly surprised by some changes in the main dining room lunch menu. Some changes were subtle (like the fresh basil and pasta in the tomato soup) while others were delicious changes or additions (like the Atlantic Crab Salad, and the White Chocolate Mousse which were fabulous!). Surprised by some chocolate covered strawberries... Yummmm! Roasted Tomato Soup Atlantic Crab and Beet Salad with Guacamole... Deeelish! Tried to be good on day one with a fruit plate... But soon gave into temptation. Shrimp and Penne a la Pesto White Chocolate Mousse... Heavenly!
