Sewinque Posted January 12, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) We will be docked in Papeete on a Sunday, so realize the market & shops will be closed. After a 3 hour snorkel in the am, what can we do for lunch & the afternoon? We don't want to go back to the ship to just sit around. Is it safe to walk around Papeete alone, are the beaches public & close to the pier where the ship is docked? Has anyone done the 5 hour snorkel with lunch at the Intercontinental Resort? That excursion will take up more of the day, but we are worried that the resort will be boring to sit around. twin123185 Posted January 12, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 12, 2014 One person's boring is another's relaxing. The IC has great pools, a good restaurant and is a great place to hang out before a flight. There is a small snorkeling spot - a pool. Not that great but it's ok. There really are no nice beaches in and around Papeete. Rent a car and explore or find a tour and explore the interior which is awesome.
Tikiintahiti Posted January 12, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2014 To continue where Twin left off ….. The streets of PPT are very safe, never had a problem. Go to a church, there are a few close by in PPT. The singing is beautiful in their native tongue. The IC is a wonderful place to hangout and you can easily walk to the large shopping center 1 mile away where there are a few places to eat cheap or you can head over to the marina area close to the shopping area for a nice lunch with a nice view. Of course the IC has some great views of Moorea : ) all beaches in FP are public, the problem is access and knowing where the beach stops and the landowner private property starts. Nothing easily accessible in and around PPT
Sewinque Posted January 12, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Thanks for the reply about the beaches. I'm glad I found out. Re the marina and shopping, I'm still not sure if they will be open on a Sunday. Is the IC, marina, and shopping close enough to the pier to walk back to the ship. What has been your favourite thing to do when you have been there
Seal Posted January 12, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I also agree that the IC is a good place to HANG OUT--been there many times usually for a couple of days after the cruise--Usually stay on Bora Bora pre cruise---You could get a small group together and spend half a day with Patrick on Papeete--have been with him often--pay attention to him he's a good teacher of all things Tahiti. We do have a tour booked from 1pm until 4 pm. Can any of the locals on this board tell us if any markets will be open on this holiday? if not do you have any suggestions on what we can do in the morning and in the evening? thanks
Tikiintahiti Posted January 13, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Go to church! Several within easy waking distance. The singing in their native tongue is beautiful.
LUVHAVINFUN Posted February 10, 2014 #9 Share Posted February 10, 2014 Good idea Tahiti! I'm going to research Protestant churches - am I to assume the service won't be in English?
Tikiintahiti Posted February 11, 2014 #10 Share Posted February 11, 2014 The singing will not be, probably Maori, their Polynesian tongue. The service is usually in French
cottagemama Posted February 11, 2014 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2014 Thank you. My husband is fluent in French & I understand some. singing is universal so I too will do a little research to see what time services are
