I will be flying in on March 1st for cruise leaving on March 2nd. We are a party of 4. we will be staying at the Monteleon in FQ. I was wondering how bad traffic will be from Airport to hotel...and then hotel to cruise terminal. I'm sure that it will be very busy due to Mardi Gras. I guess I'm trying to figure out approx how much $$ and time I will be spending in taxis.

It really depends on what time of day your flight lands.

Mardi Gras activities are usually at night, so traffic in the mornings or very early afternoons are not too bad for traffic.

Getting to the port should not be a big deal at all, it may take a little longer than normal, but the cab drivers are usually up on how to get around the mardi gras activities.

March 1 and 2 are the Saturday and Sunday before Mardi Gras and there are parades all day on both days. On Saturday beginning early in the morning and continuing throughout the day, masses of people are heading into town for the Endymion parade which starts around 4pm. These two days are the 2 busiest of the season after Fat Tuesday, so there could be a fair amount of traffic on both days. You shouldn't have any problem getting a taxi at the airport, but there might be traffic.

People start lining up early for Endymion and tons of people will be piling into the city from the burbs. You will easily sit in traffic for an hour to an hour and a half on that Saturday. I would also be concerned about enough taxis at the airport. They don't use a meter so there is little incentive to wait in hours of traffic for a less than $50 fare, especially when they can pick up $10 fares all day long downtown at this time of year. Cab drivers know how to get around the crowds. That's how they earn their living.

Endymion doesn't hit downtown until six or later, and you won't have to cross the parade route to get to your hotel, so maybe not such a problem.
