Carnival Splendor - Please help! What kind of shows?

Hi Everyone!

I'm researching cruises to treat my parents. I've never been on a cruise and they'd be first time cruisers.

I've narrowed it down to:

- Carnival

- departure from NY

- 8 days to Carribean

The ship is the Carnival Splendor.

The only thing I'm worried about (which I'm hoping someone can please chime in with thoughts) is:

- what kind of entertainment do they have nightly?

My parents are quite conservative, so I'm hoping there's something for them that's not R-rated/X-rated. My mom loves broadway shoes. Do they have any evening shows on daily basis that would be appropriate for Mom and Dad?

Also my parents don't gamble. And the nightclub *might* be a little too much for them.

I'm worried they will be bored :( . I mean there's only so much eating and lying on the chaise lounge that one can do. Please help!

They have 3 nice production shows during the week and have family comedy. They also have a legands show.

They won't be bored! There are comedians - the late show may not be appropriate but the family one is! And when we took my 70 year old dad on his first cruise last year he loved sitting around and listening to the live music. We were on the Pride and there was a guy who specialized in old country music and another that played a lot of James Taylor. There's also a piano bar and nightly events in that will be posted in the Fun Times. We did the splendor in 2008 and are repeating it in April. Have a great cruise!

Thanks very much riclop!

I couldn't find any info about evening shows on the Carnival Splendor..and the only photocopy of an intinerary I found online had an R-rated comedian performing twice that week during evenings.

From what you're saying, there's much more family-friendly shows during the evening.

If anyone has descriptions on these shows would be much appreciated. I want to make sure Mom and Dad are happy and comfortable.

Thanks again!

I was on the recent 8 day Jan 20th Splendor sailing. The cruise was awesome. All the entertainment was good.

There were 4 Play List production shows with 2 lead singers, dancers and a live band. The shows included:

Welcome Aboard Show

The Beat

Latin Music Show

Vroom

These 4 shows were all good with my favorite being Vroom. Vroom was fast paced with a good selection of old music with some good set and costume changes. I great job for a cruise ship show.

On nights with no production shows, they did have a magician and some good passenger participation shows.

At night they also did have live music in the Atrium, the casino and various lounges.

They did have 4 comedians during most of the week that performed family friendly and adult shows. The comedians were all good.

There certainly was a lot of good entertainment on this cruise. This was good especially since there were 4 sea days. I hope your family enjoys the cruise and the entertainment.

Hi,

I was also on the Splendor 1/20-1/28. Lots of great entertainment. Vroom was the best evening show and would be appropriate, as well as the family friendly comedian performances. In the afternoons on sea days, the Splendor showband does jazz/ big band shows that are wonderful. The piano bar singer, and others in the various lounges were very good. There were also magic/ stunt shows which I did not see but seemed very popular. Even the nightclub, which had different theme music nights, played by a dj, was fun, not at all risque. All around, a calm, (generally PG) atmosphere, which most should find enjoyable.

Thanks Mira :) Reading everyone's response makes me feel more at ease about booking this for Mom and Dad.

I do feel kind of funny, trying to find PG stuff for Mom and Dad...since isn't it usually supposed to be the other way around? lol..

  • 2 weeks later...

Each night there are 2 comedy shows at El Morocco Lounge. One was I believe at 7:30 or 8:00 & the 2nd at 11:00, somewhere around those times. The earlier time is always the Family Friendly show, which would be perfect for your parents. The later one would not be appropriate. That one is considered the Adult show.

That is NOT a pg show and I wouldn't recommend the OPs parent attend.

My family and I are also somewhat conservative and quite reluctantly gave Carnival a try a few years back. We'd heard all the rumors about hairy chest contest, filthy comedians and drunk college students causing a ruckus at every turn.

We found our worries to be for nothing and recently returned from our second Carnival cruise(I'm in the midst of writing a review titled Miraculous Miracle if you want to take a peek). We met several older as well as conservative types and everyone was having a good time. And in fact will possibly be on Splendor this summer(maybe with your parents?)

Things your parents may enjoy:

Different dining experiences, afternoon tea, live music, the shows, art auctions, trivia, relaxing in the spa, laying out on the adult only deck, wine tasting, shopping, strolling around and looking at art, photo sessions, movies in their room, dance class, tours, talks...there is more.

Of course there are always PG activities for them to do in each port. They will not be bored or offended and they don't have to participate in the very very small amount of "trash" that is offered. ;)

Off the top of my head the only things I can think of that may be offensive are:

Hairy chest contest, love and marriage show, there's a battle of the sexes type game, and the adult only comedy which is clearly labeled as something that may offend others. Honestly, that is it. You're parents are going to have a great time.

You may want to do a search(either here or Google) to find a copy of the fun times. This will give you an idea of all the PG rated activities done throughout the day. Honestly we've found Carnival to have over 90% PG activities and less than 10% not so much. For some reason you always hear about the less than 10% however.

Good luck and enjoy

Yes, anyone is allowed but the one I went to was far from conservative. They talked about bra sizes, bodily functions and making "whoopee". I suppose all that is technically PG...

We were embarrassed and left after only about 15 minutes. :o

To the OP: I just thought of a few more things your parents may like. Scavenger hunts and art/ craft class.

Have you watched TV lately? I see Victoria Secret models walking around with hardly any clothes on....daytime and night time.....

Whoopee? This is from the 70's in Prime Time.

Bodily functions....lol....seriously? The Fart word on TV is used so much, that it is actually common place.

If you consider these things PG.....and above, I am speechless. I am not saying it is "right"...but it is certainly reality.

Thanks for your thoughts and feedback! Everyone on this site is so helpful and wonderful. :)

I wanted to make sure that Mom and Dad are happy and comfortable on Carnival.

Certainly I'm going to steer them towards the earlier hour shows (instead of the evening ones).

I was just afraid that if they attended too many "more crass" shows/events, they would not want to cruise again! Certainly some people find adult humor funny, but my parents aren't one of them so was unsure if there was appropriate entertainment on board. Now I know what shows and events to advise them to go to. I'm a little less worried now knowing that there should be stuff that they will enjoy :) *whew* :)

Thank you Lerin! This is really helpful. I'm going to use your list to help them figure out what to do on board :) Now I can relax knowing my parents will enjoy

Thanks champagne :)

I'll be cautious and not have mom and dad go to this even though it's very funny. I can't shield them from everything, but the more I know, the more I can advise them on things that they will enjoy.

Parents need a vacation, and if all goes well, I'm hoping they'll want to cruise again :)

Well that was rude.

Please respect my opinions and I will try to respect yours.

I would not watch Victoria Secret models with my children or my parents. Same goes for a lot of what is on TV.

The show I saw a year ago had discussions about farting in bed and having sex in strange places. NOT appropriate topics of conversations based on our religion and personal values.

My entire family was embarrassed and we left.

That is fine if this sort of thing is fine in your family, but it causes quite a bit of blushing in mine.

The OP stressed that her parents were conservative and it sounded like they may be the blushing sort. I don't want them to get into a situation with subject matter they find might offensive. Just want them to see the reality of what they may be walking into so they can make an educated decision.

We sailed the Splendor twice in the last half year. :)

About the 3 shows in the theatre.

In your Fun Times you will see the disclaimer for each of the shows: Latin Fiesta, The Beat and Vroom. "The show is rated PG-13 due to costuming".

Since you mention that your parents are 'conservative', they may be offended by the 'scantily clad' dancers in some of the portions of the shows. (Not sure what 'conservative' means to all people since it is a highly subjective term) :)

And the Battle of the sexes was truly harmless. Men against the women. Questions for each side to answer. And then some physical activities on stage (ie. throwing ping-pong balls into a pail,) with 10 women and 10 men. Totally clean fun!
