bosoxfan23061 Posted February 3, 2014 Author #26 Share Posted February 3, 2014 Get a credit card. Wow...thanks for the informative response. Personally we prefer to pay cash for things we buy (with the exception of house and cars). However, there may be other reasons people don't have a credit card and your insensitive response isn't appreciated.

WOW...yes, many people cannot manage there finances and don't trust themselves with credit cards. OR, can't get a credit card. Otherwise what would be reasons for not having credit cards? Using a debit card for this is just a Disaster-In-Waiting. There is nothing insensitive about handing out good advice at no charge.
soopamanluva Posted February 4, 2014 #30 Share Posted February 4, 2014 I always use cash and its very easy. Start off with a few $100 and add as needed as you go along. Last night of the cruise, close out your account and get whatever is left back in cash. The problem with debit cards is Carnival will throw on holds throughout the cruise and then charge your card accordingly. Depending when the holds are released, it may put you in a bad situation with not having enough availability for either Carnival or other bills that come out during your cruise. It can even be days after you get home for the holds to be released so it can even effect you when you get home and may need the money to catch up on bills. i use cash also easieast way to do it
vamartha Posted February 4, 2014 #31 Share Posted February 4, 2014 Despite the debit card horror stories, I've successfully used one twice with no holds or other ill effects. But having said that, once we discovered how darn easy it is to work with an onboard cash account, we have used cash only our last few cruises. On the last cruise, I even used my debit in the ATM (yes, ATM fees apply) and put that cash on my S&S card via the kiosk partway through the cruise (after payday :D). That was when the serious gambling began! (just kidding - I'm a cheapie in the casino - make $40 last all night)
Rare Tapi Posted February 4, 2014 #32 Share Posted February 4, 2014 WOW...yes, many people cannot manage there finances and don't trust themselves with credit cards. OR, can't get a credit card. Otherwise what would be reasons for not having credit cards? We've hosted exchange students from other countries in our home. One of their reactions about life in the USA that's always consistent is why Americans rely so much on credit cards. It just dumbfounds them. The sad truth is that we do rely too much on credit cards to live our lives in this country, and your question echoes that reality. Although there are always plenty of people that say that they don't carry a balance on their credit cards, the statistics point to a very different reality, with the average household in this country owing thousands and thousands in credit card debt. You shouldn't assume that those who choose not to use a credit card have bad credit, or have bad discipline, or limited income. Anybody can get a credit card these days, really. Owning a credit car is really nothing to be proud of, or a status symbol. In fact, it takes a lot more discipline and responsibility to live a life WITHOUT a credit card. Whatever people's reasons may be for not wanting to use a credit card is NOT any of our business. But believe me, the reasons go beyond the shortsighted list that you mentioned above. You are right, must people are not responsible and pay off the credit cards every month. That is the main reason people should not get a credit card. Tell me the other reasons besides cannot get a credit card and are afraid of spending beyond there income why people don't have a credit card. People that can get a credit card and don't are very shortsighted. What happens in an emergency? Supposed you are traveling and get sick and miss and connection and you did not bring enough cash? That is very shortsighted. So, at any rate give me your good not shortsighted reasons why a person would not get a credit card?
glrounds Posted February 4, 2014 #34 Share Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) WOW...yes, many people cannot manage there finances and don't trust themselves with credit cards. OR, can't get a credit card. Otherwise what would be reasons for not having credit cards? I've had a debit card since my divorce nearly 20 years ago. I just didn't want the hassle of credit ever again. It was my company debit card and I carried a built in $100k LINE OF CREDIT any time I might need it. If I don't have the money, I don't need it. I've checked with Wells Fargo and my debit card gives me the same PROTECTION as a credit card. I've used it 20 years for almost anything and have never had a problem. Instead of signing the back of the card, my banker told me to print in "ASK FOR IDENTIFICATION" in spite of what the banks says. So I did, and I'm happy to provide identification when asked, which unfortunately is only about half the time. With excellent credit, I turn down 3 to 4 offers of credit cards per month. The only "ding" on my credit I'm told is that I don't have ANY installment payments at all right now (paid off an expensive truck a year ago and no house payments anymore). Try a husband who I trusted with finances, didn't pay bills that were in my name but the bills were not paid and I wasn't in a position to get them paid because of a divorce and he died on top of that. So, yes, sometimes s--- happens.
bosoxfan23061 Posted February 4, 2014 Author #36 Share Posted February 4, 2014 This had gotten WAY off topic. All I wanted to know was the pros and cons of using either a debit card or cash for S&S. That I believe has been properly discussed. People's personal opinions on why/why not someone should have a credit card are not relevant to the original question. Financial arrangements for emergencies and/or other unexpected travel problems don't really apply either. If you want to discuss those topics, please go create your own thread and stop monopolizing this thread to discuss your views.

bosoxfan23061 Posted February 4, 2014 Author #38 Share Posted February 4, 2014 Yes, I'm well aware of that. All I'm asking for is common decency. Maybe that's too much to ask.

Since you should never, ever use a debit card....the answer is obvious. Still, a credit card makes better sense.
