We stayed twice at Hampton Inn/Suites downtown on Robson. It was remodeled a few years ago and is nicer than usual Hampton Inn. Its about 3-4 blocks to Yaletown entertainment/boutique area in one direction, 2-3 blocks to Gastown historic area. The HI shuttle can drop you. Great place to visit is Queen Elizabeth Park/Gardens - many acreas - beautiful. :D

We booked a hotel for Vancouver on Hotwire just last weekend, and ended up with the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre for $85/night. It was listed in West Vancouver (vs Entertainment district) and as a 4-star hotel. It is on Burrard St so know it is close to shopping area on Robson, etc.

We stayed 2 nights at the Sheraton Wall Center on Burrard in May. Won it on Priceline for $80. It is the newest downtown hotel and has 36 floors, I think. We were on # 31 and had a wonderful view. It was nice and easy to get around town. We arrived from the ship about 9 am and they stored our bags and gave us info on what to do in Vancouver. There is a waiting room with restrooms up the stairs in the lobby if you need to sit down and plan your strategy for the day.

We took the Vancouver Trolley Co tour the first day and it gave us a good idea of the layout of the city. Then we set out on foot that evening and the next day for some serious sightseeing. Vancouver is a very beautiful city and has many cultures. One thing we really enjoyed was visiting and taking the guided tour of the Dr. Sun Yet Sen Chinese Garden. Everybody walks and it seems to be a safe city in which to do so.

I would take my chances on priceline, unless you have your heart set on a specific hotel. We met a couple that had used Hotwire and paid $30 more per night than we did.

Staying at the Hyatt 7/30 for $92 on Priceline but it took a lot of bidding to get it! Do go to the bidding website referenced in this thread and look at how to make multiple bids without waiting in between.

Comfort Inn on Nelson St. is pretty good. The front desk staff there is great and the food at the Irish Pub in the hotel is good. It is 1/2 block off Granville and 2 blocks from Robson where there are a lot of restaurants. I would definitely recommend it.
