Just Back from Breakaway 2/2-2/9

Our first NCL experience was the Epic in Dec. 2012. We loved it and decided to book the Breakaway for June 2013. We loved it as well! The entertainment was great and the food was all very good. My daughter loved the splash area and we enjoyed the pool. We don't do lounges/bars or the adult areas so can't comment on that. I love sailing out of NYC and really like NCL but my fear has been the opposite of what you mention. I don't think I can "downsize". I really love the big ships. I keep trying to go on the Gem or Jewel but see that the Breakaway has some good prices for April/May! A consideration for us is the kids clubs. The clubs on the Breakaway were definitely better than on the Epic so I'm worried they will be very small on the other ships. And of course, Bermuda is beautiful! :) Sorry the Breakaway didn't life up to your expectations.

Teppanyaki is usually opened for lunch only on the last sea day- its our favorite time to go

LOVE the Gem/Jewel Enjoyed Breakaway. Better shows/entertainment on Breakaway, but miss Spinneker, bar b ques, great outdoors... both ships have good points...wish we could take the good from both ships and develop our own..???

Safe sailing

Yes, If I could design my own ship it would definitely have GEMS Spinnaker, Bliss and Casino. And as I think more on this, I would also do the GEMS pools and Bali Hai..... I think I would design the Gem LOL

Is that something you can reserve before you go? I don't see the option on My NCL for that time frame any of the days.

No. Can not reserve prior.Check at restaurant when aboard. If they say no--check back later in the week.

Safe sailing

Great review. A few questions: Do they have surf and turf in every dining room or just certain ones and is it always on the first night and not again?

Does Breakaway have the Uptown Bar & Grill where you can get rubens and pastrami sandwiches?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated since we have never been on NCL or the Breakaway.

Thanks.

I tip $3 a bag in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. I can't imagine getting away with $1 a bag!

Actually, if you stand back and watch, you will lots of people that tip NOTHING.

The whole thing is insane. Most (not all) longshoreman make a good living. Add in the number of bags they handle over a 4 hour boarding and it adds up to a bunch of money.

Still, we tip the guy everytime as well.

Usually 1$ per bag in other port and 2$ in NYC.

Funny thing is...at my first cruise back in 2010 in NYC, I knew about the 2$ and we dropped the luggage at the drop off and I already had the $$ ready in hand for the fellow. He took the bags and placed them on the cart, I handed him the money...he looked at me and asked me " is this your first cruise ? " I said yes..he smiled and told me " keep the money you will need it for the parking...have a nice cruise "....I kept the 10$ and still remember that fellow today...what a nice guy !

Someone please confirm that the Getaway will have Surf and Turf on the first night in the main dining room. I made reservations at Cagney because I thought differently.

I understood that the Getaway will have lobster in the buffet on the second night.

Thank you!

Honestly, I'm afraid not to. I think there's even a sign there that says tipping is not necessary? I want my bags though LOL

The first cruisers just went out on Saturday. I believe the answer is yes, but we should know for sure Saturday or Sunday when people start posting reviews.

Just now on the first sailing, so I'd wait until a couple are completed to be sure. You might try posting your question in a thread about the Getaway. I'm interested to know this, too.

Surf and Turf is only the first night. I only was in the Manhattan Room that night for dinner so I am not sure if it was offered at the Buffet or OSheehans.

Yes, the uptown Bar and Grill does have the rubens and pastime sandwiches, very good but takes time to get.

One other tip...... If you plan on getting off the ship carrying your own luggage. Still use a porter when you get off. We had priority disembarkment (yellow) and was the first color called. After we picked out our luggage and got a porter, we walked past a huge line waiting for customs that was all the walk off people. The porters go right past that line and your through customs in 5 minutes. We were out of the terminal long before the walk offs. :D
