Just got a letter in the mail for a free cabin.

Has anyone else got one of these? Other than it's only valid on select dates and you still have to pay port/fuel fees, what's the catch?

We got one today also. When we called we were told that we would have to sit thru a 90 minute presentation. It's basically another timeshare sales tactic.

Then what you received was not the letter everyone else is talking which is coming directly from Carnival.

No catch.....and NO timeshare.......

How can it be "free" if you have to fork out money to pay port fees and tips and it's for an inside cabin? I get better offers from hotels in Vegas and Reno and I don't even have to gamble. And yes I received an offer for the so called "free cabin."

The cruise is FREE, not the port fees and tips. Wish having to be concerned about not getting a 100% free cruise without paying even parking for my car was all I had to comment on. How many stops do those hotels in Vegas and Reno stop at, and in which countries? Geezz

No catch but there will probably be tax implications for the full cost of what you would have paid for the cruise. Something to think about.

Since I just processed my return, I was in a tax frame of mind when the letter was received. I posed the question to CCL rep I spoke to when calling in to verify the letter's authenticity and her supervisor. They indicated there would be no miscellaneous 1099 form to follow. This is not to be confused with a sweepstakes and there is no need to report, let alone determine, the fair market value of whatever cruise is selected:)

Additionally, when purchasing trip insurance thru insuremytrip, it was indicated that as long as I'm paying 'something' it's not considered free. There was no need to indicate the 'rack' rate of the cruise in determining the total cost of the policy, only the fees I paid. Yes, they had the answer ready. Had said I was the third person to call that morning with same question.;)

Was nice to catch a break there too & still be able to purchase the same coverage we need.

Are the "free cabins" offered from Casino ? When I get free rooms, meals and shows in AC or Vegas I didn't know there would be tax implications.

Shorty66 - I received one of the letters you are speaking of also. I do believe it is something completely separate from what others are talking about here. I looked over mine and then threw it away because I saw the 90 minute timeshare declaration.

I sure hope it was something different!

We just returned from a 5 day on the Fascination that we booked about 12 days before sailing so I'm really hoping we will get "that letter". Before last week we hadn't cruised since October, 2012.

Still keeping my fingers crossed!

Works the same with airline vouchers. They don't cover the extras either.

This is very useful information. DH is a CPA so I couldn't help but wonder..
