Somewhere there was a question about Prince Rupert. I found it refreshing to stop at a place not overrun with tee shirt shops. The museum near the cruise terminal is really worth a visit. (Museum of Northern BC, I think) There is a great exhibit now - Freda - about a woman carver and those who studied under her tutelage. Our friends hired a cab - for $10 total and were taken to a hike someplace on a hill just out of town - and found their own float plane ride on the docks there. One of the local jewelers has a nice argillle collection tucked away in the back of the shop. And two doors down from there is a great little coffee shop/bb with cheap internet access.

So nice to see a positive comment on this port. I just returned from the NCL Spirit out of Seattle, and my welcome to PR was a little over shadowed by some fellow passengers. Admittedly, we had a rainy day, but it's to be expected when visiting one of the rainiest cities in the world. As we disembarked in Prince Rupert, all we could hear were hollers coming from the promenade deck of a group of teens yelling such things as "Canada Sucks" "Take us back to America" and "This place is a dump". It might have been laughable if they had packed it in, but they went on as long as we were within earshot. Parents, I hope these little monsters weren't yours, but if they were, how about teaching them some respect for foreign ports??? And before anyone wonders, I am not an old crank (does 24 make me a young crank??? hee hee hee). I snickered when the teens on our deck stole our "Do Not Disturb", I laughed off some of the insane antics I saw around the ship, but wow, I was pissed to hear "Canada Sucks".

Did it wreck my cruise, not even close.........but it's certainly something to think about. PR is a pretty quaint town if you take the time to look around, just pack an umbrella, and have a good time!

We did the canoe trip and rainforest hike in Prince Rupert which I would concede isn't everybodies cup of tea but I loved it. There was 10 paying customers in each boat with a guide at the front and the back. We rode across the bay seranaded by one of the indeginous (sp?) guides. We then had a guided walk around one of the islands, led by a young enthusiastic local teenager and finished up having a BBQ around a campfire for 45 minutes. The crab they served were tremendous.

Hard to put into words why it was so enjoyable. I guess it was combination of beautiful scenery, the low-key enthusiasm of the locals and the comraderie of the campfire. My kids (10 and 12) particulalry loved looking for crabs on the beach ... and the marshmallows.

Very noticable that Prince Rupert is in Canada ... no hard sells or rampant capitalistic commercialism. One guy even apologized to me for having to charge $2:50 for a copy of the USA Today ... said that's what his distributor charged him. I love Canadians :)

I loved Price Rupert...there is even a "99Cent Store" there, the people are soooo friendly, it was the only port we did not take a tour and we were glad we didn't so we could walk around a real, untouristy, little town that is going to soon be a "tshirt-souvenir" town...right now it could be "Maintown", somewhere in the midwest, but in a beautiful water and forest setting...Pattie

Nice to hear some positives about this port. We will be there in a few weeks and have rented a car. We hope to get out to the Skeena River and walk around town too. More of a nature lover than one more Tshirt shop. Sounds like this town has not made that important yet.
