Is it necessary to reserve a float/mat online beforehand, or is there plenty to go around on the island?

Plenty to go around. Just walk up with your KTTW card and one is yours for the day.

 

One advantage (especially if off season)--if you reserve in advance and then don't use it for some reason, you pay anyhow. If you do it as a walk up, you only pay for what you use.

Disadvantage--early in the day, there are 2 pick up lines. One line is for people who pre-reserved and have the ticket (moves faster). Second line is people who have KTTW and need to be charged. As soon as the crowds thin a bit, they go to a single line....and ultimately no line at all.
