I agree entirely!! :) Horrible tinkly-tinkly sound!

I submit that very very few CruiseCritic-ers have ever heard a real steel-band.

I'm talking about Desperadoes or CIBC Starlift from Trinidad, where steel pan was born

...Carnival bands of over a hundred steel pans, which sounds completely different

to the kinda Mickey Mouse two- and three-man outfits you guys think are 'a steel drum band'!

This is like comparing a violin or two -versus an entire String Section in an big orchestra!

One or two violins sound screechy and annoying

whereas a String Section is amazing!

but whatever floats your cruise ship and makes y'all happy

even a substandard example of steel-band! :D

.

Still beats the Rap Crap and garbage blasting on the giant idiot screen.

Wow 4 cruises last year and have yet to hear this rap crap mentioned all the time. Unless raps any song a certain race or any country artist might sing?

Well, I am not in the under 40 age group (unless you count mentally). That being said - I vote no to the calypso/reggae band. The first couple of my cruises had these guys, and the first two or three songs were ok - but after that not so much. As others have pointed out there are only so many over-loud, poorly done renditions of I Shot the Sheriff and Red, Red, Wine that one can handle.

Better would be to have the DJ play a variety of music representative of the ports of call. Jimmy Buffet or similar for Florida, dance hall reggae or Soca for Jamaica or Grand Cayman, etc...just not the same tired over-played set of songs. Plus, even reggae and steel drum sounds better by the original artists.

Me and my wife still remember to this day....mind you this was 1998 a couple of the songs the Calypso/Reggae band were playing on our honeymoon cruise on the Carnival Celebration. I can't tell you the names of the songs...but we heard them several times over the course of 7 days......we enjoyed them...it definitely helped fit the "mood" of cruising in the Caribbean.

..."follow the leader...leader...leader...follow the leader" - Seemed to be some sort of congo line song they would play

and the chorus to some song was something like "looking in your big brown eyes"...Although we had our crude humorous version of it we would sing to each other "looking in your big brown eye"....ha ha

Great song.:D;):)

No choice? They won't have a choice but to increase prices if they start bringing things back that cost money!

While I understand that the Reggae bands may be enjoyed by many, it's an added cost that goes against Carnival's place as a BUDGET cruise line. Giving you more is going to cost everyone more. While some may be willing to pay extra, many of us won't appreciate the cost increase over something that honestly, we don't care that much about.

IMHO opinion, the reggae bands are a nice touch, but I can only listen for about 15 minutes before I move on. I can understand why Carnival has chosen to scrap something that gives them nothing in return.

See your point but how many people including myself are leaving due to a general downgrading of the entertainment?

Oh gosh! Please not the cupid Shuffle!!!

Heard this song at least 30 million times on my last Carnival cruise (which was a B2B2B) and I knew it counted as 3 different cruises but come on. Every deck party there it was, for sail away there it was, at the night club there it was, blue iguana fiesta there it was, reds frog party there it was

Looking forward to my more calmed cruise this fall. Nothing against you line dancers but I need a tone down :)

So you want to petition Carnival to bring back steel drum bands. On an 8-day cruise they would then be playing 8+ hours/day, over and over and over and over. Is that what you want to hear?

I think that you are not clearly hearing all the respondents. Most are saying having steel drums at sail away or other times would be nice. But certainly not 64+ hours worth of the same tired steel drum songs.

A better solution is to have a multi-talented band that can incorporate occasional steel drums, specifically at sail away.

I do fully support live music (hate the DJ), but versatility is needed.

I have learned you cannot please all the people all the time.

I personally don't care for that type of music except in very small limited doses. I enjoy the dj except for when the music is too loud and songs i don't care for. Isn't everyone that way? Don't get me wrong, I'm a kid of the 80's and love loud music lol...but only the kind I like.

I for one would not sign it because I don't like it. But if it worked, and the band came back, then I'd live with that and just put on my earbuds lol.

I applaud you for taking the steps to try to make a difference for something you care about.

Oh, please NO!!!

I cannot fathom why people want to listen to poorly performed music! Seriously. Are you all deaf?!?!? Those bands were universally awful.

Now, the salsa band on our Conquest repo cruise from San Juan was fantastic. I've said for over a decade that some good Latin music would be much preferable to the crappy Lido deck band.

I hope they never return!

Agree 100 percent.

Hello fellow cruise addicts! I hope everyone is having a fantastic day and staying warm (for those of us in areas with brutal weather). A fellow cruiser's post in a FB cruisers group got some of us talking about how much we miss hearing the live reggae/calypso bands on Lido deck and it brought to my attention again how many of us miss that live entertainment on Lido and how many of us would prefer it over the awfully loud music the DJ plays (which is also what he plays in the club).

Anyway, I've seen and participated in the polls here about this subject, I've seen people ask John Heald about it, and I've seen plenty of people post about it on other forums and Carnival's FB/Twitter pages and nothing is being done. So, I've decided to create a petition. I figure if they see hundreds (and hopefully eventually thousands) of signatures all in one place they'll have no choice but to make it happen.

Here's the link, please sign it and pass it along to your friends and have them sign it as well:

Let's not and say we did. I like the variety. I think I would go insaine listening to the same music over and over again.

Not even a full day and we're up to 168 signatures. That's awesome!! Thanks to everyone who signed. Please continue to pass it along to your friends and family. For those that oppose it, I'd take the reggae/calypso bands any day over the super duper loud music the DJ plays. Also, on my last cruise I felt like there were too many long periods of time without any entertainment on Lido so why not have a live band play during the DJs break? I think that's a fair compromise. I'm not saying have them play constantly the entire cruise but I don't think they should've been done away with completely. And I can guarantee you a good portion of the 168 people that signed the petition are over the age of 40. Have a good night everyone, we're freezing here in MD!

And I also have no problem paying extra for it if need be and plenty feel the same way.

For those of us who choose to cruise on Carnival primarily because of its bargain prices, it would be unfair to pay more so that someone else can enjoy a reggae band by the pool deck. If you're willing to pay more for these added forms of entertainment, there are other cruise lines out there that deliver them.
