sashacruiser Posted March 1, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) I just received an email from Celebrity that due to operational reasons the biobay excursion has been cancelled:( I was really looking forward to it!! Does anyone have any idea why that would happen? I'm sailing this April and according to moon calender it was an optimal time to go. UnrulySun Posted March 1, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2014 There was a Huffington Post article in November that said the bioluminescence had dropped suddenly, and several tour operators were having to cancel excursions. They weren't sure what was causing it. I'm guessing it hasn't improved and that is the reason for cancelation?

It lasted about 8 days. The bay has returned to normal. That should not have had anything to do with any recent cancellations.
VaCruzers Posted March 1, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 1, 2014 A friend was in San Juan earlier this month and did a tour. Although the moon phase was ideal, he said the bioluminescence was underwhelming at best and they were disappointed. Perhaps your cancellation was for the best. At least you have advance notice and an opportunity to make alternate plans.
OttoCal Posted March 4, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 4, 2014 I would guess 'Operational Reasons' is code for some sort of issue with the tour operator- maybe their contract did not get renewed for some reason. Depending on your time that you are docked, you could potentially do this on your own. Kayaking Puerto Rico is one tour company- runs about $70 pp with round trip transportation. Contact them or any other tour operator directly and see if they could accommodate you with your time restrictions as a cruise ship passenger.
