ON HOW TO SAY "COZUMEL".

There are 3 ways I hear it said:

co-shu-mel

coz-u-mel (short o) or coz-ah-mel (short 0)

coze-ah-mel (long o).

Which one is the way people who LIVE in Cozumel say it?

Please settle this for me! :)

DITTO! THat is exactly why I am posting...so I can at least KNOW in MY head that I am correct.....they still will think I am weird b/c I don't pronounce it like them...but maybe one day when I am feeling gutsy I can tell them about this post!

Now, if someone from cozumel gets on here and says it is one of the other 2 pronounciations I am going into hiding... :o

From what I remember from my college Spanish....I always say the "o" like the word "go". There are some exceptions, of course, but generally the vowels have the same sound....not like English. When I say it correctly (I think), people think I'm an idiot. Most people say it with the short O. Oh well....hopefully someone who's first language is Spanish will clear this up!

Well, I say it in Spanish, but the common English pronunciation is also acceptable by many.

Spanish:

co rhymes with toe

zu like the word "zoo"

mel like Mel Gibson

English:

coz like the word "cause"

u rhymes with zoo

mel like Mel Gibson

As long as you don't distort it too badly, just about any pronunciation will do!

Reminds me of a local story:

We have a town named Arab . Story goes that a visitor of Arab descent was in a local establishment asking an employee of the correct pronunciation of the City. He said he had heard "A'-rab" but thought it should be pronounced "A-rub'". He asked the employee, "Can you please pronounce where we are?". She stated very slowly, "DAY-RE-QUEEN".

:D
