can you purchase tickets at the dock?

Our rather large family is in Italy in August, and after researching the high costs of accommodation for the summer, have decided that a cruise might be the answer. we are already flying into Milan and a trip to Genoa, or venice is possible for sightseeing and then boarding but I was wondering if it is possible to get bargain prices on the day or previous day. thanks

This was possible in the old days of cruising but enhanced security has made it a thing of the past.
