adamt Posted April 16, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 16, 2014 I've seen a number of folks lament over the Sushi Bar going away. I know it wasn't the best Sushi in the world, but we all really enjoyed hitting this up before an early dinner. I'm sure cost was to blame, but I consistently see people wishing they would bring the Sushi back. It's so popular at the moment, I'm not sure why it was done away with. It was a great value add, in my opinion. Any chance this we may see this come back?
LzyCruiser_NWA Posted April 16, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 16, 2014 What?! When did they cut out the sushi bar pre dinner snack routine?
adamt Posted April 16, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted April 16, 2014 it's been a few months as I understand it. My last cruise, it was replaced with something else, maybe a coffee bar. I was pretty disappointed. It's rare that I can load a tray up with as much pickled ginger was I want. I could eat that stuff for days.
Rare Jamman54 Posted April 16, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 16, 2014 It has been replaced by the Taste Bar.
adamt Posted April 16, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted April 16, 2014 What does the Taste Bar entail? Is that a wine tasting, a tappas bar? Is there an up charge for this? Anyone have any pictures?
crusinpsychRN Posted April 16, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Just off Legend Sunday. They have the new Bonsai restaurant. Very few people ever in there. I miss the sushi bar snack before dinner Wish they had it instead of Taste Bar--don't like many of the items served.
PhoenixDawgCruising Posted April 16, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Ah man!! I'm usually a Royal girl, and one of the few areas that I've always felt Carnival surpassed Royal in was the sushi. I'm a sushi addict, and I'm finally sailing Carnival again in Aug. and there will be no sushi?? Tear.:o
irishnyc Posted April 16, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Maybe I'm spoiled by living in a city with good. fresh sushi, but I don't know how anyone ate the sushi Carnival served and loved it so much. I never want to eat sushi I can smell from 50 yards away.
dd2355 Posted April 16, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Anyone have any pictures? Carnival.com to the rescue: http://www.carnival.com/onboard/cruise-food/taste-bar.aspx
maxwell'sparents Posted April 16, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 16, 2014 What does the Taste Bar entail? Is that a wine tasting, a tappas bar? Is there an up charge for this? Anyone have any pictures? They serve a different sample from a different carnival restaurant each night that the taste bar is open. I can't recall if they had it every night. The one night I remember they had meatballs from the new italian specialty restaurant. Its free but its not nearly as good or as popular as the sushi bar was. I am sure that with the new sushi restaurants (for a fee) coming on board that the sushi bars are never coming back..
Max Circus Posted April 16, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 16, 2014 If you are a fan of sushi, Celebrity still offers some great sushi every afternoon starting at 5:30. Much better than what Carnival offered. About 8 different types.

I never want to eat sushi I can smell from 50 yards away. I'm a sushi SNOB, I live in LA. But when trapped at sea, being the junkie that I am, I'll take what I can get. I guess I'd better stop for sushi on my way to the ship in August!!!:D

adamt Posted April 16, 2014 Author #15 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Not really enamored with the Taste Bar replacement. Also, not really thrilled about paying for Carnival Sushi. To echo the above....it was the best Sushi you could get hundreds of miles out in the ocean, but nothing I would pay an up charge for. Cuts Cuts Cuts Cuts. Still excited to cruise in Aug, will just have to replace my Sushi with a few more beers before dinner. Win/Win.
andy.capitan Posted April 16, 2014 #16 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Carnival replaced something that was free and not very popular with something that is also free and more popular. On some Carnival ships there are pay sushi restaurants for the limited demand for such things. Both Royal and NCL have pay sushi restaurants. Disconnections Posted April 16, 2014 #17 Share Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) With the addition of the Taste Bar, didn't they move the free sushi to the Lido buffet? Edited April 16, 2014 by Disconnections
PhoenixDawgCruising Posted April 16, 2014 #18 Share Posted April 16, 2014 The sushi on Royal at Izumi is way better than any free sushi on any line, that's why people pay for it. I can only hope that if we are now paying for sushi on Carnival, it will now be sushi bar quality (as is Izumi) not buffet quality.:)
PhoenixDawgCruising Posted April 16, 2014 #19 Share Posted April 16, 2014 To give those that have never seen it an idea of Royal's 'for pay' sushi. It's the good stuff, not buffet junk.:D
adamt Posted April 16, 2014 Author #20 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Carnival replaced something that was free and not very popular with something that is also free and more popular. On some Carnival ships there are pay sushi restaurants for the limited demand for such things. Both Royal and NCL have pay sushi restaurants. It seems to me that the Sushi bar was quite popular. Every cruise that I went on had people lined up for this freebie, and i've heard quite a few folks (like me), whine because it's gone. A taste bar of items that you're going to have in restaurants seems redundant to me.
EZ4 Posted April 16, 2014 #21 Share Posted April 16, 2014 The rice was horrendous. It wasn't good sushi. I grew up in Japan. My mother is Japanese. I know these things. ;)

Ontario_Cruiser Posted April 16, 2014 #23 Share Posted April 16, 2014 I am not a fan of sushi, so I do not really care whether it is there or not. But I am pretty sure it is still available for free on the Lido deck somewhere.

Not enough people are complaining yet, so it continues to disappear. They only seem to be putting things back that people are complaining about. Be vocal. Caribbeanqueen03 Posted April 16, 2014 #25 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Carnivals sushi was good. It smelled strong because they often served mackerel, a very strong smelling fish. Sent from my iPad using Forums
