I've sailed Royal before and you can pre-fill out the waivers for all the outdoor equipment (rock climbing, surfing etc.) online weeks before you board. It was a nice time saving so you didn't have to fill it out with the masses at the time you first wanted to do something. Any idea if NCL does the same thing?

Sorry but no. Maybe NCL will follow suit.

Unless you line up pretty much immediately, there will be a line, and there is plenty of time while waiting in line for them to have you sign the electronic waiver. Takes about 30 seconds once you get to the front of the line to get your safety harness. Swipe card and electronically sign. So even if they offered in advance from home, not sure how much time it would actually save you.

You don't necessarily need athletic shoes. You just need something with a closed toe that won't slip off. Many times I wore boat shoes (aka "docksiders"), the brown leather shoe that's almost like a moccasin. Actually very easy to slip off. They didn't deny me, although several times when I got up on the course I actually stopped and tied my shoes tighter.

One thing to know is that if you are in a swimsuit (or a rashguard shirt) and your suit is wet, they won't let you go. They said it was because the safety harness could slip off, although I'm not sure how exactly that would happen. I thought it was just because they didn't want people in wet clothes using a harness that would be used by someone else later on that would find it a little wet. But I saw them deny several people.

I'm not sure what the age requirement for signing the waiver is... it's possibly 18, but I didn't ask. You only need to sign the waiver once. So on the first day, when they all choose to go, just be there with them and sign the waiver. Then the rest of the week when they want to go they just swipe their card or give their cabin number and the waiver is already filled, no need for you to be with them on subsequent visits.
