Going no drink package - dangerous?

Recommended Posts

the point is , you basically have to drink a fair amount to make it worth it. now it might be worth for some to not think about it or be bothered counting how much you drank i see that point ,but for moderate drinkers i dont see a need, as i said what if 1 or 2 days you just dont feel like drinking much , now you have to have 4-6 drinks through the day to break even?

also many have different tolerance so yes for those with high tolerance it may be worth it. i get pretty nice on 4 drinks myself. basically i just dont think id like to be drinking 6-7 drinks every day for 6-7 days in a row.

You can feel however you want about it. That doesn't change facts.

You are 100% allowed to just ignore the facts because of your feelings OR just ignore them because you don't want to sign slips of paper like the other poster, but you can't change the facts.

In order for the cost of the package to be lower than the cost of individual drinks (no matter which type, alcoholic or non) you have to drink a set amount of them.

This doesn't mean you have to get drunk, but it does mean that for the sum total of your individual drinks to outweigh the price you paid for the premium drinks package you have to drink a certain amount.

If gasoline is $4.00 a gallon, but someone tells you that you can get unlimited gas for a week for $400, you would have to use more than 100 gallons of gas in that week for it to be a dollar savings. You can certainly use 50 gallons of gas and justify this as "worth it" to yourself for any reason at all on the planet that you choose to use, but the facts are that you overpaid. You can also justify this as "worth it" because you didn't have to pay each time you stopped to fill the 10 gallon tank, but the facts are still that you overpaid.

well said, its only a question of math. will you drink near that much or not.

But it's not like you are sitting there drinking the four drinks right in a row. Even if you didn't start drinking anything until noon and you stayed up until midnight that is 12 hours to consume the 5-6 drinks necessary to make the package worthwhile.

For some it's worth it. For others it's not. No big deal! Personally for my husband and I, it's worth it. And I don't think I've ever been drunk on a cruise.

I would say that we are moderate drinkers as well. We bought the package this time because it is a special occasion and I think it would be fun to be able to try any drink and not worry about whether I won't like it. Plus it includes water and soda. We leave in 3 weeks so I will let you know what I think.

It is worth it for me for sure.

Here is why

1: Whenever I pass a bar, I get a bottle of water. I either drink it, or take it back to the room and save it for later. Comes in handy on excursions. 3 x daily = $10.50 day

2: I drink 1-2 soda's at breakfast, and 2-3 more during the day. But to keep things conservative I'll say 4 soda's a day = $8

3: It is nothing for me to drink 2-4 beers throughout the day, especially on sea days, but in the idea of staying conservative we will go with 3 x $5.75 = $17.25

4: I always try the "drink of the day" by the pool. $8 ??

5: Without question I stop to get a mixed drink on the way to dinner, usually a jack and coke. = $10

6: With the alcohol package, I will usually try whatever wine is paired with the entree I order. If I like it, I'll have another one. If I don't, I'll chug it or send it back, and order another one. Either way, I have two drinks with dinner = $20

7: By the time dinner is over we go to the evening show, or comedy center, or some other entertainment venue, and I'll have a drink. Red Bull and vodka please. $10

8: I've been known to wind down with a decaf Irish coffee too :)

BY my rough calculations, thats about $84 a day, give or take a couple bucks.

On port days, I might drink a little less. On Sea days, I may have even more out by the pool.

I hardly ever drink at home, so I like to enjoy myself on the cruise and the package allows me to try drinks that I probably wouldn't order if I knew I had to pay for them, even if I didn't like them.

All in all, it probably ends up in my favor at the end of the cruise, but I would rather know ahead of time what my bill will be.

Hope that helps break it down a little bit.

The $55 a day package includes soda and bottled still water. If you want bottled sparkling water, you've got to move up to the $65 a day package.

In my real life I tend to drink very little. I work 7 days a week most weeks and just don't have time to drink. There have been a few times in my life where I get away for a weekend and over do the drinking the first night. I tend to not want to drink the next day. When I'm on a cruise I spread the drinks out over the course of about 12-14 hours and haven't had a problem!

The package definitely isn't for everyone and luckily Royal doesn't make everyone purchase one!

Even through your snarky, condescending reply, I am glad you agree with me. I add up what I spend on any types of drinks that I have to pay for and it amounts to more than the cost of the drink package. That is why I said I feel it is worth it for me to buy the drink package.

I am very similar! Replace the breakfast soda with a latte and fresh squeezed OJ, and beers with pina coladas and I'm probably over your $84 calculation. Plus the package includes the gratuity :) I don't drink like this every day but on vacation I relax a bit.

We are bringing the 2 allowed bottles of wine for the room, drinks on the balcony at night, cannot wait! First question - can I bring a corkscrew for the room bottles or does that count as a "sharp object"?

Also ... if I do not buy any drink package, what can I drink onboard? Is there a charge for water tea and coffee? I am purchasing the Royal Refreshment package for my partner as she drinks several sodas a day. I really don't drink anything but water and coffee .... help!

(This is my 12th cruise, 4th on RCCL ...but it has been 7 years since the last one; I need to re-learn!)

Thanks in advance!

You can bring a corkscrew. We bring a small one on every cruise.

I disagree that you have to be a big drinker for it to pay. For instance it also includes the soda which is 6.50 a day, that brings the $55 down to 48.50. Drink a few of the included bottles of water that I understand go for around 3 or 4 bucks a piece and your down to close to 40 bucks or less. average mixed drinks run around 8.50 plus tip that will get em close to 10 each, have one around lunch, one mid afternoon, a glass of wine with dinner and a couple more drinks in the evening and you've passed your 55 dollar daily fee.

I agree!! I'll have 2/3 bottles of water 2/4 sodas and a couple froz drinks at the pool 2 glasses wine at night w my meal a drink or 2 later I have then got my money worth just my 2 cents

Just got off the Navigator on Sunday and I purchased the $55 a day package. Think one of the lost facts here is the soda package by itself is $20. So literally your paying an additional $35 a day for the liquor. I didn't keep track but usually tried 2 new drinks a day, picked up at least 3 bottle waters daily and kept in room fridge, then probably had 3-4 drinks a night while in the Cosmo club or casino or just walking around the ship. My drinks of choice usually was Bombay and Tonic or Crown and Coke. New drinks tried that ended up being pretty good were Wildberry Rita, Raspberry Ricky, London Lemonade, California Cooler. I usually have a 6 or 7 drinks a night on Friday and Saturday but generally don't drink Sun-Thurs. Felt I got my monies worth from the package without getting plastered everyday.

Yes, but it still only costs $65 a day, including gratuity. I would estimate conservatively getting $100 worth of drinks for that. My DH on the other hand only really drinks soda, juice and water, so for him it would be better to get the $20 package and pay for any alcoholic drinks as he goes.
