What do you think of how far Royal has adapted to the Asian market? I have heard a few similar comments from Aussies who have been on Mariner since being in Asia. Too Asianised is the general verdict. Too many smoking areas even from smokers. Casino full of cigarette smoke. Poor food hygiene by passengers in Windjammer . If you do not push in lines you will get nowhere. Most cruises on Mariner and Voyager from April to October are full charters or full with Asian group bookings. Priusprof Posted May 30, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 30, 2014 If a ship has been changed to fit a particular clientel and you don't fit that demographic then don't sail on that ship. We discovered this in Brazil when we sailed Splendour. The passengers were 80% Brazilian and the ship and activities were set up for them. As it should be! Other cruisers and travel agents should be advised so that people don't get surprised.
kruzerci Posted June 1, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 1, 2014 It breaks my heart to read things like this about the Mariner because of the fantastic memories we have of her. Back during her Port Canaveral days, she was my favorite ship. I have kept up with her reviews on the member review page and most of them seem to be just fair at best. Having traveled to Asia and experiencing that culture; between the hygiene and (lack of)personal space aspects of their culture combined with being in a confined space on a ship, I cannot imagine anything worse than being on an Asian cruise. CAT GIRL Posted June 1, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 1, 2014 Reading material :http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=248734 Anybody was on the Mariner lately? What do you think of how far Royal has adapted to the Asian market? We were on the Mariner in March doing a B2B Singapore to Shanghai. I think the ship will be in Asian for quite awhile. It was totally redone to cater to the Asian market. And from what I heard the sailings are VERY profitable. The expensive $3600 bottles of alcohol, the $30,000 watches all selling. That's not to mention the profits coming from the casino which is absolutely huge. I was not surprised when the decision was made to take the Quantum over there. We did enjoy our Mariner cruise. But then again we like to experience different cultures. We were definitely in the minority so if that would be difficult for you then you might not enjoy this cruise. Highlights of this cruise was the concierge, Marine. The team in Chops. We had one of our best room stewards ever. And we had our pick of pools chairs at any time of the day. Before we sailed, I was wondering if this cruise would deliver the same type of personal attention we get on other RCCL ships. In that aspect, the ship did not fail. We were sad to go and felt we made several friends of the staff onboard.
LindaO Posted June 1, 2014 #6 Share Posted June 1, 2014 MARINER -over asianised? -- is a derogatory remark. If you are curious as to why RCI is 'courting' the Asian Market... just do the math. China alone has over 1.351 Billion people. Right now there is one (yes only one) travel agency RCI is working with in China... and it has over 275 Million clients. Though there is a huge income gap between the poor and the wealthy in China the level of disposable income for all in China has been on the rise and steadily continues to rise every year. Sailings geared towards a specific culture with the information noted above will sail full and at premium pricing. Changes made to the ships will pay for themselves in the first few sailings.I'd expect to see a few more ships headed to that area of the world. That being said it came from the review in the op where the reviewer described themselves as Asian. Here is their quote: "The whole ship had been "Asianised" and being Asian and Singaporean I can say that the experience was worse" Edited June 1, 2014 by dudaze11 grammar
kruzerci Posted June 1, 2014 #8 Share Posted June 1, 2014 MARINER -over asianised? -- is a derogatory remark. No, it's actually not. It's a simple statement of opinion.
Blue Darter Posted June 1, 2014 #9 Share Posted June 1, 2014 No, it's actually not. It's a simple statement of opinion. I suppose you could say Donald Sterling's remarks about people of color was just an "opinion" too but most people would disagree with you.
