Travel from Quebec to Montreal

We will be disembarking from a cruise in Quebec on Friday, Oct. 3rd. We'd like to then make our way from Quebec to Montreal and catch a flight home to SLC, UT from there. Flights are much cheaper leaving out of Montreal.

 

Any suggestions on the best way to travel from Quebec to Montreal? We've been looking at renting a car, but would also be interested in train or bus. If we do this, how close from the cruise terminal in Quebec are we to the train or bus?

Most cost-effective is the bus.

 

ORLEANS EXPRESS has regular service between Quebec City & Montreal, It is on an hourly basis if I remember correctly. They use "coach" type busses with plenty of luggage space, comfortable seats & wifi !

 

That bus will bring you to the Central Bus station in Montreal. From there there is a dedicated airport bus (#747 !) that goes to the Montreal airport. It is a 24 hour a day service.

 

EDIT: Orleans Express also offers service direct to the Montreal Airport from Quebec City ! (just found that out).

The train is also a good choice, although a bit more expensive and less departures; it is an enjoyable ride. I think that you can take the train all the way to the Dorval station (which is right next to the airport), and then a short cab ride (5 mins) to the airport (no easy way to walk to the airport from the train platform). I think VIA RAIL offers a shuttle from the train platform direct to the airport...suggest you check on that with VIA RAIL. Alternatively, getting off at the Montreal Central Train station, you can also take the #747 bus to the airport.

Be sure to inquire whether the train will have a baggage car, if you'll have more than a carry-on. We are traveling in September, and there are NO baggage cars on the trains. As a result, we have decided to take the bus.

Also could depend on how many people are in your group. We have two kids, so four bus tickets were over $200. We got a rental car for much less than that and we'll be on our own time schedule.

Even without a baggage car, there is lots of room on each car to stow your baggage if you have more than a carry-on. There are limits under Via Rail's carry-on policy, but it is more generous than an airline:

We looked at their baggage policy before emailing them to inquire about the baggage car. It's quite limiting. I have a tall husband with size 15 shoes, two pairs of which practically fill up one carry-on-sized suitcase. Then there are the clothes for two pre-cruise days, 10 cruise days and 2 post-cruise days, all to fit in the other carry-on he would be allowed. :eek: I'm sure most people don't have the same problem.

 

Our other consideration was the number of buses running between the cities compared to the train. If we can't make the early train, it will be a long wait for the next one, when we could take the bus and already be enjoying Montreal.
