To my understanding… when the lava is flowing into the sea (which it currently isn't), the ship enroute to it's next port, sails in this direction, to enable a night time "glow" to be seen.

 

 

 

That's right. We have that sail by while going from Hilo to Kona. Was hoping to see the lava flow but I think we are out of luck with that.

We did the sail by on the Island Princess back in December 2005. It's at night so if the lava is flowing and dropping into the ocean, you can see it, even though your ship is a distance from the coast.

 

If the lava isn't flowing, you won't have anything to see.
