Advice for Athens to Monte Carlo

Dear Past Cruisers: Hoping to get some feedback about the proximity of the pier to several stops on this cruise. If anyone has been to Syracuse, Lipari, Ponza, Portovenere or Symi, can you tell me if the towns are near where you dock so that we can walk around on our own? Are any of the excursions that Seabourn offers worth it or should we try to navigate on our own? Thanks so much!

When are you sailing? We're on that same itinerary in September.

 

The only port I've been to on your list is Portovenere. When we were there in 2010, it was just a short walk from where the tender landed to the ferry, which we caught for a very scenic ride to the Cinque Tierre. We rode to the furthest village and then made our way back, taking the ferry to most, but walking between two of the closest villages. You could also take a train between the villages, but the ferry was very simple for us to do on our own.

 

Although we didn't visit Portovenere at all, as I recall the town was just past the dock and looked worth a visit.

Thanks for your response. We are actually going on June 20th. We have visited Cinque Terre so do not need to do it again, but will spend time in the town of Portovernere. (Sorry if spellings are slightly off)

If you call Seabourn and go port by port they will tell you if they have shuttles to center of town- if they don't it means that you can walk to town from dock.

Portovenere is good for about an hour's walk. Lovely views from the old church at the end of the town. The church doors are particularly interesting.

And, also, don't forget to admire some of the world's narrowest residences, all very picturesque.
