Grand Lobby question

When you embark in New York do you enter the Grand Lobby on 2 or 3 deck?

While I do not recall the actual deck number, it is the lower level of the grand lobby, across from the pursers office.

That is Deck 2 then.

 

But from my photos, we definitely boarded on Deck 3. It has occurred to me that perhaps visitors boarded through a different gangway than passengers... With passengers boarding on Deck 2, and visitors on Deck 3.

thanks. I when I visited QM2 in April 2004 it we entered on Deck 3. Maybe it changes depending on the tides in the Hudson.

Someone mentioned visitors boarding on another deck. Does the QM2 allow visitors aboard--I thought all that had gone by the wayside since 9/11. I wouldlove to have a friend permitted to board the ship before we sail just to see it.

Passenger visitors are not permitted on Cunard (only Radisson and one other luxury ship). Host Doug was an invited guest of Cunard.

 

We boarded on Deck 3 and Disembarked on Deck 3, on two sailings in 2004.

Actually, for most cruise lines, this went the way of the dodo after the ACHILLE LAURO hijacking in 1985.

 

As Jeanne mentioned, visiting her as a member of the Steamship Historical Scoiety of America Long Island Chapter (along with about 100 other members), I was a guest of Cunard, not of a QM2 passenger. Unfortunately, passengers can't invite guests. Cunard, of course, can invite anyone as it's their ship ;) .

 

But the age of bon voyage parties etc. is sadly long gone.

In NYC, I've boarded on BOTH upper and lower Grand Lobby levels. But come to think of it, one time our berth was north of the pier (meaning we embarked on the starboard side) and the other time, we were to the south of the dock (meaning port side embark).

 

So it could either depend on the pier or have to do with tides.

I always find it interesting that most passengers assume the security measures are post 9/11 when they have been post Leon Klinghoffer all along, with the exception of the hightened security for QM2. The image of that poor gentleman being thrown overboard in his wheelchair was a nightmare for the cruise industry.

 

Fortunately we will be having our first bon voyage party in over 25 years on the Radisson Navigator in less than 3 weeks. They are allowing us to all board at 12noon (the ship's last passengers disembark about 11:30) and our guests then leave at 4pm/

Seriously, have a great time. I guess you are doing NY-Bermuda... Have wanted to do that on her ever since RSSC began that route. We were actually booked on this last year but had to cancel for personal reasons. Off to Europe this year... Next year we would like to do something from home, and darn it - RSSC decide to pull her from Bermuda. ARRGH ;) ...

When I sailed on the Tandem Crossing, everyone entered into the Grand Lobby. When I sailed the QM2 in March, I entered into the Chart Room. I heard that Queen/Princess Grill passengers enter into the Grand Lobby.

We were on the July 5th crossing from NYC to Southampton. There were two entrances! As we approached the ship, we gravitated to our right and were "redirected" to our left. (We wondered if perhaps the entrance on the right was for Princess/Queens Grill passengers...)

 

That entrance to our left put us onto the ship at the Chart Room. After a few steps, we looked up and saw that we were just at the entrance to the Britannia restaurant. We went right in, and changed our seating from early to late, and thus was the beginning of a very happy journey.

 

I don't know where the other gangway, to one the right, lead, or which passengers were directed to go on that one...

Embarking in Southampton was all via the Grand Lobby (I forget which deck, I was just soaking it all in!) Disembarkation in NY was via the Grand Lobby for Americans and via the Chart Room for the rest.

Embarking two times in New York City, the ship being on the downriver side each time, entrance was onto 3 Deck, into the top level of the Grand Lobby.If you don't want the hassle of an escort to your cabin, take a quick right and just aft of the glass tubes to Kings Court, use that elevator bank. But don't forget to come back and turn left to that elevator bank and be photographed in front of Sir Samuel Cunard's "Welcome Aboard." Do that a night in black tie.:)
