shieldsboy Posted July 1, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2014 We are travelling on the Radiance later this year in a family group with the youngest member being a 2 year old. Whilst at home his parents use a wireless baby monitor to watch him from another room when he is asleep. Would this wireless system work between 2 adjoining cabins? Has anyone tried such a system on-board? Does the ship's phone system have a loudspeaker capability so they could hear him from another cabin using the ship's phone in each cabin? Can you use SMS to send messages (using mobile phones) from one location on the ship to another location on the ship? Any advice/ideas would be very much appreciated. Illyria Posted July 1, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2014 There's a thread from a few years back, that seems to indicate that a baby monitor will work for the lenght of a couple of staterooms but not much further than that (metal in walls). http://cruiseforums.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1307270
AussieVisi2r Posted July 1, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 1, 2014 Can you use SMS to send messages (using mobile phones) from one location on the ship to another location on the ship? Don SMS works well on the ship. Most carriers charge 55cents to send and nothing to recieve when using global roaming. Check with your company. aronde Posted July 2, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 2, 2014 ... Does the ship's phone system have a loudspeaker capability so they could hear him from another cabin using the ship's phone in each cabin? That is a great idea and I would be very interested to hear if anyone has tried this. Our two kids will be in the cabin across the hall on our next cruise and the use of the phone would be a good way to monitor them at night to ensure they are not having any 'disagreements' with each other! :D
oskarNZ Posted July 2, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 2, 2014 I spend time on another forum where a poster described an experience she had with connecting staterooms. She had pushed the connecting door most of the way shut so her child wouldn't be kept awake by the television. Unfortunately the poster fell asleep and forgot to reopen the door. The young child awoke in the middle of the night, and startled by the unfamiliar surroundings walked out into the corridor. The woman awoke to hear her child disorientated and crying loudly out in the hallway. Even though it was all an innocent mistake, the poor poster was so distraught by the events and the thought of whatmight have been had the child wandered off, that she shared the story to warn others. I apologise for a response that doesn't actually answer the question, but I thought it was important to share. Because the surroundings of a ship are unfamiliar to a child, the child's actions may not always be the same as they are at home. It's part of the reason cruise lines ensure at least one adult is booked per cabin. Has your family checked if there are any free connecting cabins left on the ship? An open door between cabins would provide a much larger feeling of security.
fanoforion Posted July 2, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 2, 2014 Hi, I was under the impression that no young children were allowed to sleep on their own in cabins, they must have an adult with them.( especially a 2 year old.) that was for most shipping companies. kind regards, Lorraine :):)
Tara Jane Posted July 3, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 3, 2014 Perhaps the OP is thinking along the lines of parents putting the little one to bed and socialising in a cabin nearby. While I wouldn't do it myself I do know a lot of parents who would happily do that and think nothing of it. I would be the granny who offers to stay behind, miss whats going on in the ship and stay with the 2 year old but that's just me.

cathiecatt Posted July 7, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I agree with OskarNZ - check if there are interconnecting cabins. We were unable to get interconnecting on our last cruise and because we were in balcony rooms, they opened up the balcony dividers for us. This allowed us to sit with the doors open and chat, while still being able to see the kids. :) Sent from my iPad using Forums
