pinkroses Posted July 8, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2014 (edited) We are trying to book a short gulf beach stay before a cruise out of Galveston. I have read the Texas beaches are covered in seaweed and are not very nice right now. Any recommendations for beach/hotel would be appreciated. It doesn't matter distance from port. Thanks! Galveston Cruiser Posted July 8, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 8, 2014 The entire Texas coast, some Florida beaches and some Caribbean islands have been inundated with Sargassum this year. As the summer goes, it will disappear. Sargassum is from the Sea of Sargasso off the coast of Africa. The only sea that has no land touching it. Sargassum is an ecological feeding system for sea life. It is also a nesting area for the endangered green turtle and Kemp's Ridley turtle. If it wasn't scraped and removed from beaches, there would more beaches, more dunes and more turtles. There are numerous hotels on the Seawall facing the Gulf of Mexico. Check tripadvisor or Galveston.com for a good selection. Hotels on the port side are Harbor House and The Tremont. The Tremont has shuttles that go to the Galvez on Seawall. There is lots to see and do in Galveston and great restaurants. Check out galvestonhistory.org Enjoy your stay and cruise.
