Question re: Rome on Celebrity

Hello All:)

Does celebrity offer a bus into Rome from the cruise ship? We are interested in booking a private tour of the coliseum and were wondering what the best way is to get there...

We arrive September 17th at 7:00am (on the Equinox) and were thinking of booking the tour for about 10 or so.

Also, on the cruise we will visit Dubrovnik and Mykonos...do they have buses into "town"? I can't seem to find any info on this...

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for the info!

Celebrity does offer a bus into Rome, it's called Rome on your own. However it's pretty expensive and you can only go during the time slot that the bus goes. Many many cruisers take the train from the port into Rome. It's called the BIRG ticket and it's €12 round-trip and also gives you use of the buses and Metro during the day.

You can get off the train at the Roma Ostiense station and take the metro from the same station (called Pyramide) two stops and you will come out right at the Colosseum. If you would like more information just ask, or you can visit the Italy boards and get a lot of great information there

On Mykonos you will either anchor in the bay and tender in, or you will dock about a mile from downtown and in that case they will provide a free shuttle bus into the center of the village.

When we were there in Mykonos , June of 2012, Celebrity had a shuttle bus at a cost of $10

A cab was 8€, there was 4 of us

On the way back we took a city bus for 1.5€

The only time there is a free shuttle is when the port does not allow people to walk inside the port area

You are correct. Last year Sept 2013 we docked and paid $10/person X shuttle bus in. We were on Silly.

It is to dangerous to walk as the road is very narrow and no sidewalks.

I agree with Cathy, only thing to find out was where the Port shuttles drops you off , the old location was better

Rome: We find it to be much faster to travel from the port to Rome via train. A 10am Colosseum tour is too early either via the Celebrity bus or the train. I would suggest booking the Colosseum tour for closer to noon. If you purchase a combo Colosseum/ Forum pass you can walk through the Forum or Palatine Hill at your leisure while you wait for the time for your Colosseum tour. Consider booking an Underground Colosseum tour. We did this last time we were there and thought it was great. Not only do you see the sub level; you also get to go to the top level. The view from there is magnificent!

On a prior trip we booked a RomeInLimo tour with 3 other couples, which made the private transport doable for us. The van was at the port as soon as people started to get off the ship. We squeezed in a tour of the Colosseum + Forum + Trevi Fountain + Pantheon + St. Peters, then made a photo stop at a beautiful overlook and still had time for a gelato before heading back to the port. This was very, very fast paced and we were very tired, but we thought it was worth it.

Dubrovnik: We took a cab from the ship to town. This was easy, reasonably priced and the driver gave us a mini history lesson.

Mykonos: When we visited last August there were no cabs available. You had to take the $10 bus or walk. We had no trouble making the walk into town. However, we had hoped to find a cab in town to take to one of the beaches and they were so scarce that we finally gave up and spent the afternoon shopping.

We have been looking at Celebrity Shore Excursions on the Celebrity web site for an upcoming cruise. Celebrity recently updated those pages and some of the excursions and it appears the former Rome on Your Own we had taken in the past (which was a bus that dropped you off near St. Peters and picked you up there at the end of the day) has been changed to "Rome on Your Own with a Smart Device" and the price has increased by $30 per person over what the charge was before the change. The only Celebrity independent transfer into Rome now showing is a private train to St. Peters station.

We did the Rome Celebrity trip and our guide was superb. She really brought the city alive. The queues for the Colosseum were massive but we walked straight past them which was great. Our trip also included some free time in the afternoon where we explored some more on our own. It was a great trip. Here is a link to the mini Rome video we did.

There is a local bus that stops next to the port gate in Dubrovnik, and will take you to the pila gate (same place the shuttle stops)

The bus returns from the same place (across the street)

They are very regular and approx. 1 euro each way.

You can purchase the tickets on the bus (in Kuna)

Mykonos, its quite a walk into town, but very pleasant, but will be very hot with no shade.

There is a local bus, I read about but did not find it when we were there.

Rome, when travelling back get on at the termini station otherwise it will be full and may not stop at the other stations, the train were on did stop at the Vatican on the way back but the only room left was for sardines.

just found this

At the parking lot at the docking area in Tourlos is a stop of the public bus. This takes you in 5 minutes to the parking lot at the old port of Mykonos (where the shuttle buses from the cruise lines also drop you). At peak times, the bus runs every 30 minutes, at normal times, every hour. A ticket costs € 1,60 per person (one way) and can be purchased on the bus.
