We are on the same cruise next week and cant wait (provided the Icelandic ash cloud doesn't strike again)!!!

Re Seven Mile Beach can you advise how much we should expect to pay for a taxi to and from this beach and if its easy getting a taxi back from there with no stress?

Also what should we budget for sun loungers for the day?

Thanks

We were there on the Freedom a few years ago...took a local "bus" (read van) to Cemetery Beach, yes, you walk past a cemetery to get there. Public beach, no facilities, but the most beautiful blue water and NO crowds. We were there with maybe a dozen people. Just bring a towel from the ship and enjoy! When you're done just stand on the side of the road going back to the port and the local "bus" will stop to pick you up and will drop you downtown for shopping:)

We just did this in July. "Taxi" is really a school bus and they pack every inch. We paid $10 pp/. You just tell them what time you want them to come back and get you. We didn't have to pay for the beach but I think we paid $15.00 for the 2 lounges. They had a DJ playing music and having contests. The is a bar and a restaurant. The beach they take you to is very rocky bring water shoes. It also has a drop. I believe there are nicer beaches down the road further that do charge but not sure what it is. I would check the port of call section.

Any ideas ?? Don't do snorkelling looking for a few hours on a beach and some shops :)

Grand Cayman is wonderful...agree with others regarding Seven Mile beach..BUT, you want to make sure there are facilities there, so here's a place we've used 3 times:

http://royalpalmscayman.com/

It's just a few $$ to get in and they have a bar, food, lounge chairs, restrooms,etc...also walk around Georgetown, it's very nice and locals don't harass you like in other ports..you can eat in town and sit over looking the harbor with all the ships in it- try & sit somewhere upstairs with a view.. and try the Tortuga RUM CAKE..there's a store & free samples...yummy!

Take the public bus instead of the "taxi" bus. They leave from the library and it's $2.00 per person. The yellow (route 1) and green (route 2) buses will take you anywhere along 7 Mile Beach. The beaches are all open to the public beyond the high tide line and there are marked public access paths. Royal Palms charges a couple of bucks for the use of their facilities (restrooms, showers, changing rooms, etc), but there are other beaches such as the Public Beach that offer those facilities for free.

If you are church goers it's always fun to send a postcard to the church from Hell, Grand Cayman. The place is mostly a post office and small store, but the joke is always funny.

As others have said, Stingray City is an experience. You don't have to get off the boat if you don't want to, but they are not as scary as you might think.

The turtle farm is fun especially if you get to hold babies.

You might want to check out a "tour" thing that goes to multiple places. It's not very big so it doesn't take much time to get around so you can do a lot in one day.

Stingray City is a 1-of-a-kind experience. Highly recommended.

Hell is basically a tourist trap.

Turtle farm is ok, except that once you realize where the little guys are headed, it's not so cool.

  • 1 month later...

There are a lot of fun things to do on Grand Cayman. We've done the stingrays, fun and interesting. We've gone to the turtle farm, fun and so cute. We've done circle island tours. And there's Hard Rock and Margaritaville. This last time we did a bus tour to lots of places and ended up having coconut shrimp at Margaritaville. You'll have a blast matter what you do.

I was just looking through old posts and our family is going to be on cruise late November and one of our ports is in caymans... what did you guys end up doing?

Yes, the town is really near where tenders dock and there are tons of restaurants, shops, etc. you can also hire a cab to go anywhere. Sending postcards from Hell is always fun and cheap. Also, there are really nice beaches... Like 7 miles of them!

Hell has been made into a tourist stop but if you go to the back parking lot and to the back of that lot you can overlook the rock formations that give that bend in the road the name of Hell. Forget the gift shop & lame pictures.

If going to 7 mile beach, research where you want to be let off by a "taxi" or the overcrowded van. And give plenty of time to get back to the pier as they wait until the "taxi" is full & that includes the isle seats. And traffic can be very slow getting back to the port.

Shopping is friendly but no barging. Great Britain alcohol is a bargain. Rest not so much. Walk a few blocks inland & you may find more reasonable souvenirs.

Watch for cross traffic - they drive the other way.

If wanting to do an island tour or Stingray City, check out local tours on internet & the reviews.

Food prices are very high. Eat a big breakfast on board, carry factory packaged snacks, & eat lunch once back onboard.

Grand Cayman is my favorite port.

As I recommend earlier, take the public bus vans instead of a taxi. It's cheaper ($2.50 US), and they are on a schedule so they don't wait forever for a full load. From the port, cross the street and take Fort Street two short blocks inland to the Public Library. Get on the Route 1 (Yellow) or the Route 2 (Lime Green) bus and tell your driver that you are going to the Westin. When they drop you off, make sure they show you where to catch the bus back to the port.*The buses come by every 15 minutes.
