pirates q.m.2

No matter, it's a fun evening; but I found that very few people actually had pirate costumes. There was the occasional hat or parrott on the shoulder, etc. Plenty of casual island wear, however. We were a group of 8 and I went to orientaltrading.com and got bandanas and blinking pirate pins. The pins were a great hit and enabled us to find each other acoss the crowded deck.

It is considered poor taste, however to arrive at the Main Dining Room in one's Pirate Costume - an entire table did on QM2 - front and Center adjacent the Captain's table.

On QE2 gentleman were given red bandanas, but on QM2, were charged.

I think you will find cheaper, packable things to bring. I knew I could do better than anything for sale in the QM2 shop. I like the idea of the costumes in the dining room, after all, it wasn't a formal night, so who cares?

We have actually found lots of bargains in the shops and also like those 10 scarves and we even like the Bijoux Terniner watches costume jewelry that is $10 an item.

It was informal the night on the QE2 and Casual Night on QM2 - but even causal night has a dress code. So on QE2 gentlemen were dressed in jacket and tie and most ladies in dresses.

Actually there are many who would not care to dine seated next to someone dressed like Captain Hook - waving a hook - black goo smeared on his face and a red bandanna tie on his head and ripped jeans with holes in them, not to mention the tarted up "wench" besides him dressed in hooker fashion of the 18th century.

It is called your Daily Programme and placed in your cabin to guide you on proper dress for the dining room that evening as well as dress after 6pm. The Pirates Ball is a single event in the ballroom after 10pm. Pirate Wear is not the recommended attire for after 6pm on board the ship.

Prior to the advent of QM2 questions such "who is the arbiter of good taste" were not asked on this Cunard Board as those who sailed on QE2/Caronia wanted to dress properly for dinner at sea and were only to happy to seek advice on this board in regard to correct dress.

This is not The RCCL forum whereby the endless debate over whether it is proper to wear jeans in the Main Dining Room is a perpetual thread.

I see that you are new to CC (or else someone known well to us but with a new user id).

We agree with the bad taste of dining whilst dressed as Pirates , we belive that you should dress correctly for dinner and then change afterwards , I understand that the pirate ball dos not start until after 10.00 pm therefore there is plenty of time to change after dinner if you so wish.

On a different note again, on previous Princess cruises we were dismayed at the number of people who dressed formally for dinner, on formal nights but as soon as dinner was over changed into something very casual, we have a video spoilt of the champagne waterfall where most are in DJ's and ballgowns yet a few on the video are actually in shorts and T shirts.

We always dress has requested in the daily bulletin and respect others accordingly

Gays that I have traveled with and met on Cunard are always impeccably attired at dinner in whatever the dress for the evening calls for. Dress is all important on a Cunard sailing.

Agree! No one seems to have all that much consideration for others which are what manners are all about. It is all the individual: me, myself and I - my vacation, no one is going to spoil my fun, etc.

One of the best nights at sea was during a formal night on QE2. After dinner we repaired to the casino, all the ladies were gowned and the gentleman in dinner jackets - like a night in Monte Carlo or a scene from Thunderball with Sean Connery. Everyone looked resplendent. Then we danced in the Yacht Club. It was exhilarating to walk out on deck and watch others dressed so fine strolling by.

Thanks Jeanne S - you've solved my dilemma asto what to wear for the pirates night - its got to be "wench" outfit, otherhalf not too sure about going as Captain Hook - thinking maybe the crocodile - anybody out there got a spare alarm clock??

Chill out - these events are designed to be FUN & if cunard didnt want people to participate they would not sell attire nor would it be part of the programme. Participation in these events are surely what makes them a success. As an afterthought, it appears your insults towards Captain Hook & his Wench are purely based on their relative closeness to the captains table - could the green eyed monster be present - perhaps!! The captain might have had a sense of humour unlike a certain passenger on the 'outer tables' who instead of enjoying the fayre on offer deemed it necessary to scan the dining room in order to criticise, at a later date, the infiltrators

The pirates ball we attended on the QM2 had about 30% dressed in costume. I got the impression that those who had not brought a costume wished they had. Some of the costumes were completely over the top and some looked to be regular wardrobe items pressed into service. If we take another Cunard cruise where the Pirates ball is on the agenda we will definitly take great costumes. Joan

That chill may emanate from the stares you are likely to receive from your fellow diners when attired in your wench outfit.

We were able to view this table as we were adjacent to it being at table 77 front and center and had to view them the entire meal. As for the Captain, I actually asked him during my bridge tour what he thought of a dining room filled with Pirates - he would have you walk the plank.

I am curious, are you commenting on their dress or table manners? Was the party dining on mutton legs with their hands? Spanking the wenches over their laps and laughing wildly at pretenting to get drunk while drinking mead from a pewter tankard?

Or were they they just enjoying a lovely meal while wearing the appropriate after-dinner costumes?

Both, they were also acting as if the ball had already begun and were not pretending to be drunk, they were drunk. It was one of those things where you have to be there. Here we are sitting in the splendor that is the BR with the string quartet playing overhead watching the Pirates have a food fight.

You only bring this to light now, so it wasnt the costumes it was their behaviour that was offensive? Had these people not been dressed in pirate attire their manners would have been the same, or are you suggesting that fancy dress brings out the animal in people. You havnt mentioned if any of the crew tried to stop the 'food fight'

My wife whilst out shopping (which seems to be most of the time) will sometimes see a dress which she refers to as a cruise dress, She has acquired a number of these dresses which hang in her wardrobe still with the labels on until we are fortunate enough to join our next cruise/crossing which is more often than not every other year (too much money spent on those cruise dresses).

We are not in the party ball set and do not attend many glam events, that is why we look forward to our bi annual trips, my wife can enjoy wearing those little cruise numbers she has lovingly stored for such times.

I agree that we will be on holiday and should be able to relax and enjoy wearing whatever we want, but let’s not forget that some of us enjoy the opportunity to make that special effort for those special evenings which certainly in our case do not occur all that often.

I know we would feel very out of place if we were the only ones dressed for dinner, which is why I agree that the dress code should be adhered to if not only to respect fellow passengers.

There are alternative eating venues on board for those who wish to don the more casual attire, and there will be times when I will be doing just that, but please let’s not spoil those special evenings which are remembered long after the event.

So, it was the behaviour, not the clothes. I daresay that had the table been dressed to the nines, they would have been just as offensive.

here here you have got it spot on its not the quality of the cloth you wear but the quality of the person in them that counts i for one will make an effort to dress for the night even if it repulses others around me but my behavior will be A1 ;)

I have mentioned about the pirates ball to my family and it got the thumbs down!! Generally how many percentage wise tend to dress up in pirate costumes??? Will we feel out of place not being in pirates attire??

Also my daughter likes the idea of the masked ball. I just have no idea where I can get her a mask from (Venice is the place for one of these!!). Any ideas?? Don't forget we are Brit's so I would need somewhere here in the UK!!
