ocjason Posted October 1, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 1, 2014 we are on a river cruise later this year. I believe the boats dock over night, does this mean you can get off and on the boat late? What are the "rules"? We are trying to figure out if we can get off the boat to hit up special restaurants or bars in the cities we are visiting. thank you! We enjoy itineraries that stay overnight in port and take advantage of that to get out and about for or after dinner. After a certain time, you simply use your keycard for access (this is on AMA for sure and as I recall, Avalon was the same). The main entrance is at the 24 hour front desk and you will let them know when you leave (with AMA you take your boarding card with you and then turn back in at reception) and this is how they know who is not aboard. Rare Familygoboston Posted October 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 6, 2014 On our recent cruise there were a few nights when we arrived late or stayed overnight (meaning no all aboard time) and we were encouraged to go into town if we wanted. Most of the folks didn't go out, but we did a few times. On our itinerary with very small towns, most of the towns were pretty sleepy, streets were dark and not much was open. We still wandered, but we felt we were safest in a group of at least 4. We never saw anyone threatening, but with the quiet and dark, it just felt better to go out with another couple or two!
