We've been on 28 cruises and still book shore excursions thru the cruise line. Why? Because we like to be 'babied'....meet at the specified location at the specified time, be led by the hand to wherever the transportation is then picked up and taken back to the ship without having to worry about getting back in time. It's impossible to do all the shore excursions offered but they are a great way to explore any place you've never been to before....almost all ships offer some sort of shore excursion tour of the islands/ports where they stop. Maybe that's just us but we like to be sure we're back at the ship in time and the ship will wait if one of their shore excursions is late returning...not so if you are on your own. Everyone has their own ideas about shore excursions. Sometimes just staying on the ship is an option. It's almost as if you have the whole ship to yourselves, especially if you want to get a deck chair near the pool and just relax.
