Question about Cash

Hello,

I'm a new cruiser from Texas,

Will be sailing with NCL on the west coast.

I'll be paying cash for my on board deposit as I don't want to link my credit card to my account.

I was wondering, what happens if at the end of the sail, I don't have enough for DSC on my account?

I don't think they can detain you from non-payment of the DSC as it isn't a law.

Might want to look on youtube and look for detained nonpaying NCL passengers - latest one happen on the GEM's gangway.....

You have to maintain a certain balance in your onboard account. Should you exceed that balance, for instance in the Casino, or one of the bars, you'll be denied service until you provide additional cash. Every single swipe of your card anywhere on the ship is deducted immediately from you account. In fact, on the newer ships, Epic, Getaway and Breakaway, you can actually look at your balance on the stateroom TV. ;)

You can believe what you want, but if your account is still open, you will have to return to the front desk to close out your account.

Simple stuff.

Balance owed. You do not get off.

This is called "Theft of Services", look it up. Could be charged as a larceny, and may be either a misdemeanor or a felony, based upon the value of the services.

It's my understanding that you have to put down a deposit to use cash or a debit card. For a debit card, it's $300 for a 7 day cruise, and if you spend $300, they put another hold on your card for another $300, and so on. For cash, they cut you off if you spend the deposit and you have to deposit more. The service charge comes out daily.

it seems that this is one of those treads of how to get away without paying the DSC. i just don't get why people do not understand DSC is part of the cruise fee even though you don't pay it at front when you book. People do not understand that when you decide to have it remove it from your bill at the end of the cruise who you are cheating is not NCL is all the people who made your cruise amazing, and some people argue that they do not use many services or you do not interact with many employees, YOU DO, every time you go to eat either at the buffet, or the Main dinning restaurants, your cabin's steward and many others that keep your cabin and the whole ship nice and neat and many others that are part of the DSC, so think of those before you try to save a few bucks.

I purposely pay the DSC just so I can have bath towels for my room. I don't want to slip and fall while showering plus having that and your room made up is nice added bonus.

Just so it is crystal clear and there is no misunderstanding, NCL does NOT wait until the last day to charge the DSC. They deduct $12 per person, per day, from you onbaord account each day beginning on Day 1 of the cruise.

We had great service from all the staff on our cruise. I would prefer to have that cost just rolled into the cruise fare and given to the staff as an official wage, rather than having it tacked on later, but I think we got our $12/day worth, considering how pampered we were compared to our average land vacation.

Another highjacked question: And, I am a great tipper and intend on over tipping with cc...

...What do they do with the person who owes?

Do they wash dishes for a week? Go to jail? Do we have to wait in port until they come up with the money from the previous cruise?

The cash deposit required is enough for DSC and some additional. They deduct the DSC each day. They'll notify you during the cruise if you only have enough left for the remaining DSC so need to add more in order to charge for drinks, photos, etc.

Not to hijack the thread, but I prepaid my service fees. Do they show as a credit on my onboard account and then just reduced daily by the $12 PP?

We prepaid our service fees on our 33 day cruise on the Sun in 2010 and on our 26 day cruise on the Star last year. In both instances they did not charge the daily $12 to our account since it had already been paid

Made the final bill much easier to read and several pages shorter since there wasn't a daily charge written for each of us.

In response to the question, what do they do if you cannot pay a balance due at the end of the cruise -- unpleasant story from about 8 years ago, so not sure if handled the same way today. But we were on Royal Car. and in a foreign port on the last day of the cruise. Husband had on shorts and asked me to put wallet in purse. Had purse on back of chair in a restaurant and swung around to sit on my lap, I got distracted, and the next thing I knew, it was gone. All our credit cards, debit cards, cash. Fortunately, our passports were in the room safe, along with a small amount of cash, but I had to cancel the credit cards, and of course, that included the one I had used for our on-board account. They were very nice about it, allowed me to use the phone in pursers office to make calls to cancel the cards, and even arranged for transportation to the airport the cost of which was added to my onboard account, but by the time I finished making the calls, they had a Promissory Note all ready for us to sign, a notary type person to stand there and witness my and my husband's signature, and the note had a clear confession of judgment clause in it if payment was not received within a certain number of days of arrival home (meaning that I was giving them the right to confess judgment against me in a court they chose and without the ability to defend in the amount set forth in the Note). It was obvious that the form of Promissory Note was a standard form -- they must encounter that situation more frequently than I imagined. We will never make that mistake again. We each carry one card, and leave at least one other one and some cash in safe when we leave the ship. Very unpleasant way to end a very nice trip.

that must have been a stressful experience. I guess given the circumstances, it isn't that bad. Almost makes me wonder why that lady put up such a fight on the youtube clip. (someone put up her fb account on the youtube site...why?) I lost my wallet/license in LA day before my flight back home....flying without a license 3 months after 911 was a difficult task to do...

I think there might have been a little more to that women story then not paying her DSC.

I am thinking it might have been a little more serious then that.

What about applying for a rc credit card on the spot? That will solve all the problems, since they apply the on board bill to the newly opened CC.

I got a rc cc and a carnival cc and I use them for on board billing.

Of course, as alluded to earlier in this thread, if one were tight on cash, they could always go to the guest services desk a day or two before the end of the cruise and have the DSC completely removed. They will ask why and ask you to sign a form indicating the reason, but they will honor your request.

If you need a credit card and are going to get on, do it before you leave. Personally, we travel with 4 different credit cards. Two for me, and two for wife.

They are free. They are cheap insurance if you need some money in a hurry.
