richleeds Posted November 24, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 24, 2014 I would look at the arrivals for the day you are going and make sure something wide bodied is coming in during the time you intend to be there. The videos online look great but there is nothing much to see if you just get a few island hopping small propeller aircraft in which is the main traffic into the airport. Magicdi Posted November 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 24, 2014 I would get a taxi, from what I remember it's about 15 minutes away from the port by car. We went last year as part of a tour and it was great to see. Only a small narrow beach with quite a lively beach bar. there was a lot of air traffic whilst we were there and some people are crazy enough to stand on the beach so when the jets put on the thrust to take off they get blown backwards into the sea with the force. The bar has a large flip flip notice board with all the air traffic landing times and where the planes are coming from.
soobs Posted November 24, 2014 #4 Share Posted November 24, 2014 we went last year and because there were about 7 ships in and around port the traffic was like a car park and we spent at least 1.5 hours each way saw a couple of small planes and one big one done it now wouoldn't bother again

Looking forward to low flying planes. Thanks. Hi, we caught the local bus which is a white mini van. It only cost $US2 pp each way. If you look in the Ports of Call forum - Caribbean - St Maarten for the full directions. It is a very easy and cheap way to see how the locals live. We did the same, really easy, the bus leaves from Back Street. Fun day at the beach would definately go again :)
