New Orleans Embarkation for Dawn

Hello Everyone!

We are on the Dawn Jan 11th. Has anyone just returned that can tell me what embarkation/ disembarkation is like in New Orleans. I am travelling with my in-laws who have some mobility issues. They prefer not to use wheel chair service as they are modest people and try to walk as much as possible. How far is the terminal from French Quarter? Cost for cabs? Is the walking distance in the terminal reasonable? Also we are traveling in a suite, is there a separate area for check in.

Thanks for any information!

Just got off two weeks ago. Embarkations is pretty good but it is a bit of a walk, escalator up and then a serpentine walkway to the ship. 5 minutes or so. Everyone goes through the same security process so depending on the time of day it can be a bit of a wait, 5-10 minutes all the way to 30 minutes for security, then if you ask you will be directed to the suite area, sometimes you need to be forceful and remind them you are VIP.

The terminal to the FQ is about a 20 minute walk if you hurry, if I was mobility impaired I would not do it. Taxi is usually about $9 for two people.

Disembarkation has been a nightmare for the last two years for suites, a footrace to see who can get off first and quite a customs back up. If your not in a hurry and want to wait till the end, it is a bit easier.

Taxis to the cruise port terminal from downtown is $7 per person, this is a set price.

Its a maze to walk there, I am in good shape, and have been there many times, and would not try to pull a bag to get there.

Hire a taxi.

Taxis have a set price from the airport to the cruise terminal: a flat fee of $35 for the first 2, and $12 per person for 3 or more. Plus a $1 fuel surcharge per trip.

Have a great trip, we will be there in a few weeks. ;)

My 84 yo mother uses a walker. We used the trolley to get to the FQ...trolley driver was extremely helpful in lowering a lift for her to board and get off. Cruise terminal is adjacent to the river walk mall...which is huge and offers a lot of shopping and informal dining. From security to the ship was not too long of a walk...and there were elevators available.

Is the suite check-in a separate room, or just a different counter and then taken to the suite waiting area?

You will be escorted to the suite check in after security and then escorted to the suite waiting area. Sometimes you need to be a little firm with the people after security to ensure you get escorted to check in. Mention clearly that you are VIP/Suite guests and they will take care of you.

We embarked in NOLA last April - My 90 year old mother, DH and me. Mom and DH have mobility issues. The taxi brought us in and dropped us at the closest door to where we entered the maze to get in to the terminal. If he had gone all the way forward to the farthest door we would not have had to walk the entire length of the terminal to get to the line into security. We were unable to get a wheelchair until after we went through security, even though we had asked for one. Just after security there was a waiting area with a staff person who took names and then directed the wheelchairs to the names on the list. Once we sat there for about 30 mintues wheelchairs came and took us to the suite check-in, then to the VIP lounge.

Thank you! On the sky the suite check in was in a separate area and I know that we will require a supervisor upon check in. Due to my daughter's severe allergy she is removed from our reservation the morning of check in. Yes, every time we cruise we go to check-in, hand over our edocs listing all passengers and they say our daughter is not listed as a passenger. It helps me to know ahead of time what to say to the representative checking us in and who they need to reach and where that person most likely is located.
