scoobert2 Posted January 14, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2015 Does anyone know where to buy good Mexican vanilla? Pictures or brand names would be great! Is there any problems with buying it and bringing it back home? Thanks!!
Mgetta1 Posted January 15, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2015 I always get a bottle. Used to get the bottle with red rooster on it, but have been buying whatever was available. It is more expensive at the cruise ports, than just going across the border, but still a good deal for excellent vanilla.
bptex Posted January 30, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2015 Every duty free store sells the Los Cinco Soles brand. It is a whole lot cheaper there than online.
dioxide45 Posted February 1, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) I would avoid vanilla in Mexico. Here is an FDA warning about vanilla in Mexico. It often contains Coumarin which is a substance that is banned in the United States. It doesn't even come from the vanilla bean. Really no different than the imitation stuff here. Just buy the good stuff here north of the boarder. You can usually get it for a pretty decent price at the warehouse clubs like Costco or Sam's. It can be kept indefinitely and won't go bad. So no worry about having to buy a big bottle. Edited February 1, 2015 by dioxide45

I agree - I have made my own for a couple of years now. Just need some vodka and vanilla beans. Easy peasy.

In 2012 I bought the Los Cinco Soles brand & it specifically says it does not contain Coumarin on the label.
maldenmusic Posted May 12, 2015 #8 Share Posted May 12, 2015 Azteca Vanilla is high quality and does not have coumarin. It has a picture of the Mayan temple on the label.
WomanWillSail Posted June 6, 2015 #9 Share Posted June 6, 2015 This tired chestnut about Mexican vanilla is such a cliche. You can find better quality vanilla at your local Whole Foods or other store in the US. Mexican vanilla was exotic back in the day when Liz Taylor visited Acapulco. Things have changed! Costco and Sams are in Mexico and nowadays, all the good Mexican stuff from coffee to shrimp to vanilla, is exported to and available in the US and other first world markets and not sold in Mexico. karlanee Posted September 11, 2015 #10 Share Posted September 11, 2015 We bought a bottle in Cozumel at the Rum Cake Store. It is AMAZING and double strength. The owners are Americans who live in Cozumel.
