Passport question

HI

Passports are issued by the State Department, but entry/exit is enforced by Customs and Border Protection Services of the Department of Homeland Security.

The Customs and Border Protection Services states on their website that photo IDs are needed for minor aged 14 or more.

"(Minors
under
the age of 14 are not required to show a photo ID, State Departments of Motor Vehicles will usually provide a non-driver's license for people 14 and older. Public School photos are also acceptable.)"

You really have to search around to find all the official answers. It is not all is one place. I hope this is helpful.

When will the Travel Initiative be implemented?

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

  • December 31, 2006 – Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
  • December 31, 2007 – Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

I thought there was an additional phase to be implemented on December 31, 2005. Is this a change?

In April 2005, the Departments of State (DOS) and Homeland Security (DHS) announced a proposed plan to be implemented in three phases beginning on December 31, 2005 for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. After further review and considering the delay in publishing the public notice in the Federal Register, DOS and DHS recognized that implementing the December 31, 2005, phase would be problematic for travelers during the upcoming winter tourism season. This change will simplify the implementation and provide a longer lead-time for travelers to come into compliance with the requirements.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't understand all the people that say it so so much eaiser if you have a passport. My wife and I went on a cruise in May 2004 and only took our Birth certificates. It took only minutes to check in. Until they are definitely mandatory I certainily will not pay for a passport.

We have had our passports for about a year now, I was informed by these CC Boards that it would make it easier to board A plane, Cruise ship Etc... Some on these boards have even said about a year ago...... Hey!! All I do is flash it and I'm on my way.....

Not true...... I have found that you are just as scrutinized as anyone else who has a drivers license or B/C.... They look at you and the picture about 5 times....then still send you to the extra security line at A domestic USA flight ..... Faster how????

As for making the lines faster during customs while on A cruise...... Nope..... Wrong..... IMHO..... Does not make one bit of difference.... As A Matter of fact when getting off the ship the line for those that did not have A passport moved faster.... I told my wife.... Hey!! We should have gotten in the other line....

Now, This has been 7 Airline trips later and 2 cruises.... I tested this on a domestic flight and did not use my passport, Just my drivers lisence and did not get stopped or hassled.... Go figure that one...... So...... Isolated incident, I don't think so......

So where does the ....... It makes it easier and faster part come in? Not in my opinion...... Just another view.... Take it for what it's worth.... I have not found A passport to be faster in the USA for flights and on A cruise to be any faster or better than other forms of identifaction
