firsttimecruiser9876 Posted February 5, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2015 If I want to take a taxi from St Thomas to Red Hook to catch a non-carnival excursion, will this be fairly easy to do? Will it take some time to get a cab? How much will it cost? What type of cab will this be?
kendon Posted February 5, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 5, 2015 Extremely easy to do. Any taxi will take you to Red Hook, but keep in mind it's very expensive (sorry I don't recall the amount). Also, allow plenty of time on the return as their can be a lot of traffic back. Perhaps someone else can post the amount.
Rena921 Posted February 5, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 5, 2015 You may want to ask this in the St. Thomas section of the Ports of Call boards.

firsttimecruiser9876 Posted February 5, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted February 5, 2015 When you say expensive for a taxi - is this $10 dollar range one way? $50 dollars one way? Is this usually an open air taxi or a van? When you say one dollar bus - do these look like school buses? I will also post on port site. THX! stargate fan Posted February 5, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 5, 2015 If I want to take a taxi from St Thomas to Red Hook to catch a non-carnival excursion, will this be fairly easy to do? Will it take some time to get a cab? How much will it cost? What type of cab will this be? It's very easy to get to Red Hook. We did this on our own in April 2014. When we docked in St. Thomas, we walked out the port area to the left towards a K-Mart. It was about 15 minutes walk through downtown. There was a side street directly before the entrance to the K-Mart plaza, on the same side of the street. An open-air bus came by. (There was no bus stop, the bus just stopped.) We asked if the bus was going to Red Hook. It was, we hopped on and off we went. Up hills, around curves, and we arrived. We paid our $2 each. We then paid $14 each, cash only, at Red Hook for the ferry. Note: The ferry left every hour on the hour. One couple showed up a minute after the hour and, even though the gangplank was still down, were not allowed to board. 20 minutes later we arrived at Cruz Bay. We hopped an open-air bus to Trunk Bay. When we arrived, we paid the $6 each. When we were there, the US government was in shut down, so we didn't have to pay an entrance fee into Trunk Bay. Normally, it's $4 pp. Trunk Bay was absolutely gorgeous. There were life guards on duty as well as a bath house attendant, all working without pay. (Government shut down.) The life guards wanted people to swim safely while the attendant had pride in the cleanliness of the bath houses. As far as others saying it was expensive...not so. We paid $28 each and spent nearly five hours enjoying the beautiful water and sand. The Carnival excursion was $69.95 pp and those folks were at the beach for only two hours. We heard the announcement calling the Carnival people after only two hours. We just reversed our route to get back to the ship. Getting to and from was an adventure that was enjoyable and one we'll never forget. On the way back from Red Hook to the port, the "bus" was full of high school students. It was a hoot seeing that they were no different than mainland US students. Then there was the Rastafarian man who sat next to me. He had quite a scent of pot about him. Next time we sail to St. Thomas, we will do the exact same thing to get to Trunk Bay.

We left the port area to catch the $2 pp taxi because we didn't want to pay $10 per person for the taxi in the port area.
CountryCruiser Posted February 5, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 5, 2015 Our excursion person arranged our taxi and it was $10 pp each way to red hook and back. If you get car sick in any way, make sure to use your preferred medication. Lots of windy turns and starts and stops. Traffic pretty clear in the morning, but much heavier in the afternoon.
