Question on Great (big) Bay Beach

When in St. Martin we planned to take water taxi to Great Bay Beach for morning and then return to ship for lunch and then have afternoon for shopping. Our 4 other stops will not let us return to ship for lunch due to our plans for these ports. Now some friends told me swimming at Great Bay beach is not a good idea because the water is often dirty and you could get sick. I have never heard this before. Anyone know if there is any truth to this since this is our 2nd port and don't want to get sick and miss anything, especially eating. Thanks for any information you may have on this. Gail
