Jewel Transatlantic – Shoreguy Blogs - 4 September 2005

I got to run over to the pier today to see the Jewel and all I can say is WOW!

She's huge! I'm not crazy about the hull artwork but also don't give a flying hoot about that, just an observation. There seemed to be lots of important people pulling up in big fancy cars, being escorted around, shaking hands, making comments about the ship as if it were their first time seeing it. I thought maybe today was the christening. I didn't recognize anyone, no Hilary...in sight. That was just before noon and I had to run. Hey shoreguy, know anything?

Thank you for the posts from the ship. I just stumbled across this thread and greatly enjoyed your postings as well as responses from others. We got off the Dawn on the 11th and one of our CC members also did a daily post. From you descriptions of the Jewel, I think the Dawn may be a better design except for the smaller pool area. I am an occasional (<monthly) cigar smoker and I firmly believe a good containment vessel is needed for cigar smoke. The Dawn handled it well; the Celebrity M ships had a nice cigar bar in Michael's Club, but they banished cigar smokers to the aft open deck.

Shoreguy, thanks for the fabulous pics and wonderful commentary on your TA Jewel cruise. :D It's been great for me to live vicariously through you as I recover from recent surgery. Now I need to convince DH that we need to take another cruise. The Jewel looks amazing through your eyes. I especially loved your pics of Iceland & Ireland. They were beautiful!

Leticia & Tony, how are you and your families doing? Two days after returning from the Dawn, the pins in my elbow slipped and I needed a total elbow replacement! It's been a tough month, but I have the wonderful memories of our cruise and all the great people I met at our M&G.

Hi Judy

I have been meaning to post to ask how you are getting on with your surgery. The last I read, you were going back to have the pins replaced. I didn't realise the you had to have the joint replaced. Now that should upset the metal detectors when you get on and off the ship. That's a good reason to rebook, to see if it sparks them off :D

Things are fine with us, although like you I have been spending too much time vicariously cruising with Shoreguy and TrLngx (Ontheseas.com).

I still haven't edited my hundreds of pics down to a reasonable number for printing. I have however, spent loads of time looking at them. Also, really must start a review as people may find it iteresting to see the Dawn and the NY thing from a Brits perspctive as I found Shoreguy's trip to Britain experience interesting. NCL must have found a really old coach with no A/C. Most tour buses now are equipped for travelling on the continent so will be equipped with all mod cons including an extra door to allow people to exit on the "wrong" side when overseas.

Another reason to submit said review is that we were not impressed with NCL's bus transfers either.

However, my big job when we returned was to put a pond in the garden so that has taken my time.

Must go, so as not to hijack the thread, take care of the arm, regards to all yours, and get your pics posted.

Tony, Wendy, & Natalie

Shoreguy,

I read a post that you stated there was a problem with the coffee and that you headed for Starbucks as soon as you got off of the ship......no coffee pot in your room....hummmmm.....guess there is no hope for my favorite hazelnut flavored coffee with hazelnut creamer unless I bring it myself!

I too was checking the threads everyday for your posts while you were on board. It was wonderful of you to take time out of your day to let us all know what to look forward to. This will be my first cruise and I think I picked the right ship to sail on, we are in 9520, rooms above and below with a balcony. Hope that the weather will cooperate in February, at least it won't be hurricane season!

Thanks again,

Diane

Don't give up hope yet. My cabin had a lot of things that were one off. You may want to wait to here from others. I know marilynd had an AE like we did and had an expresso maker.

Who knows for sure what is in a standard balcony?

There is always the option I had used in the past on the Dawn. Pack a french press. Boil water in the hot pot and make great coffee with the press. For every problem there is a solution. If your coffee is important to your enjoyment pick up a small press and try it at home.

For jrose529

Heal quickly my friend...I've broken my left arm three times (no pins or replacements though) and can understand a bit of what you must be going through. Glad you've had a number of vicarious cruises to keep you occupied while you recover.

:) Dear Shoreguy.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for your wonderful Jewel blogs! DH and I just returned from the Mexican Riviera cruise on the Star last night. While on board we booked the Western Caribbean cruise departing March 19th, 2006 on the Jewel. We booked a penthouse suite, and are really looking forward to our cruise. You really gave us the scoop we were looking for. I was wondering if the internet access in suite was complimentary, or did you pay the regular rates? Thanks again for all the info!

Glad you enjoyed but I think I had more fun posting. Internet access same cost as anywhere on the ship. There was a bonus for signing up the first day plus additional free minutes as a past cruiser.

Read everything :)
