internet--laptop not wireless

For those who are knowledgable about internet access and computers, I need some help.

I will be on the Enchantment in Nov, and have found out that I am going to have to do homework online. I have a laptop, but it is not a wireless. Is there a way to "make" it wireless, and if not, can I still use it? What will I need to be able to use it?

If I buy the package, can I use it anywhere, or is it limited to my cabin?

If I have to sit and do classwork while on my cruise, I would like at least to be able to look out and see the ocean, not the walls of my cabin.

Great, just want I wanted on a vacation, I had planned on some reading, but to have to sign in class, and some work, sheesh. :(

Thanks for any help I can get.

I am one of those idiots who know very little about computers. Can do things, but the insides of it, I am lost.

Here is what I do know. It is a Gateway, it is ethernet capable, a 56 Kmodem, 40 G of hard drive, rest, I don't know. I bought it for college, my master's. It is 2 years old, and was close to the top line when I bought it.

I have been reading about cards and such here, and I am not sure as to what I need. I do know that I am going to have to go online for at least an hour three different days, and I would prefer to be able to take my laptop instead of using the ones on the ship.

Thanks for any help that has been and can be given.

from the RCCL website:

Is Internet access available from the ship?

Yes, royalcaribbean online allows guests to access e-mail and the Internet for a small fee. The following ships offer internet access in your stateroom using a Cyber Stateroom hookup that is available for rental while onboard: Adventue of the Seas®, Brilliance of the Seas®, Explorer of the Seas®, Jewel of the Seas®, Mariner of the Seas®, Navigator of the SeasSM, Radiance of the Seas®, Serenade of the Seas®, and Voyager of the Seas®.

Not sure if the Enchancement has internet. I would call RCCL. If they do offer it you may not need wireless if they supply the network cable in the hookup mentioned above. As long as you have a network (ethernet) card in your laptop(looks like a phone jack, only bigger) I believe you would just plug into the wall and the ships network would have the wireless.

If you do need wireless here is what the previous poster was talking about. I linked to Walmart because most everyone has one nearby but stores like CompUSA or BestBuy will probably be cheaper with sales or rebates.

A PCMCIA card if you have this slot

A USB card if you have a usb port

If you have to hard wire the conection with a cable into a jack on the ship and you don't have the ethernet jack on your laptop you may need something like this, assuming you have a usb port. This would plug into your computer and the cable would plug from this into the wall.

I only have limited experience with wireless/networking, and am still waiting for my first cruise, but I believe my info is correct. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

Good luck and enjoy your cruise

The enchantment I understand is wireless only.

You have several choices;

A. Bring your laptop to an internet cafe while in port..usually very cheap ( $5.00/hr).

B. By a wireless card or USB connection card, cheap on ebay my son bought one on ebay for $10. Bey buy has one for $39

C. Rent the one from the Cruise =$50 for the cruise

D. Connect through the internet cafe, you will not be able to send any files or pics.
