Tulum- How to do on our own?

6 of us will be in Cozumel 1st week of October on the Valor. Want to see Tulum and then snorkel at a nearby beach. Can this be done on our own? Any recommendations on a tour guide/ferry, etc., as well as for a good beach to snorkel at when we're done?

Thanks, Tom.

hmm.. we're going to use Edventure tours. Probably easier if you're going to Calica/playa del carmen though.. . don't have the link with me right now, but they've been very helpful and have lots of great things said about them on the calica board.

This is a great way to go! You can design your own mainland tour and, with 6 people, economically hire a private driver. We did this when we were there in June and, granted we were staying in Cozumel, it was wonderful to have such a private trip. We took the first ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen where our driver met us. From there, we went to Tulum and hired a guide (about 45 minute to 1 hour tour). Then we went to Akumal for snorkeling and lunch. After that, our driver took us around the area and we wound up back at PDC. It was about a 6 or 7 hour day for us but we saw and did a lot. You could customize your trip with the above link as you'd need for your timeframe.

I have heard that this is one of the few tours you are better off doing with the ship...too many transportation issues to risk getting back late and missing the ship.

So true...just last week a passenger went to Tulum on their own. And guess what? Yup, you got it. Same day as the passenger who got lost at Chichen Itza...not sure where she was...but had to pay $145.00 US to get back to Playa del Carmen. Don´t risk it.
