Hi everyone! I have a 13 y/o who just got certified for 60ft yesterday...unfortunately, neither my husband or I are certified. (The kid used his Bar Mitzvah money, but he's the only one who could afford it!) Anyway, we're cruisin to Cozumel, and one of his instructors suggested Jeremy @ Living Underwater. First if "The kid" has not had many open water dive yet, I would not suggest Cozumel as the start. There is a fast current and you need to get down quickly so as not to get swept away from the group. Second "the kid" being 13 can not dive without another certified diver because untill you are 16, you are concidered a junior diver.

BUT...if you pay the DM to go down with him, it should be a good experience. They can dive with a buddy, DM, Instructor, etc. I have been cert since 1984 when I was 12.

 

Properly chosen there are some mild drift dives that are fine. If you choose a small boat operator (Pappa Hog's comes to mind) than you will have a DM escort and maybe two other divers on the boat.

You bring up an interesting point and one worth while talking about....where to do your first dives on a cruise.

 

I have to respectfully disagree in saying that Cozumel is not a good location for a first time diver, regardless of age. Here is my rationale:

 

(1) By doing "lazy man diving" in Cozumel you will consume less air.

 

(2) Visibility is normally phenomenal. How many other places can you get in the water and see 80' down to the bottom. Not many. I think this gives divers a sense of calm when they can see the bottom and not experience vertigo.

 

(3) The operations in Cozumel are great with new divers. My wife and I dive with the same divemaster because he is so good with every skill level diver.

 

(4) With the clarity of the water, the sites are unreal! I mean, how awesome is it to dive for the first time and see everything so clearly.

 

I understand your point, but I just wanted to add another side. Hope no offense was taken.

I agree with this opinion, as long as the diver is upfront about what their experience level is. This will help the DM choose the dives sites for that day's diving. First time divers really, really, should tell the DM that they are first time divers so the DM can keep an eye on them during the dive. The new diver should also make a effort to stay fairly close to the DM during the dive. Not only will (s)he be in a better position if they need help, the DMs know where the cool stuff lives and can point it out .

 

Cozumel is a great place to dive for either a newbie or a very experienced diver, as long as they dive sites that are appropriate for their skill level.
