Rare Shippy Posted May 12, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 12, 2015 We are supposed to cruise out on the Infinity this Friday. W just received an email saying people on the current cruise were sick and there would be a delay because of extra cleaning. They just had this problem a few cruises ago. Anyone on the Infinity now that can confirm this ???

They just had this problem a few cruises ago. Anyone on the Infinity now that can confirm this ??? Not on the Infinity but I would have no reason to doubt this. I will say that many years ago we were on a sailing on the Millennium. The couple cruises before us had noro outbreaks that were severe. When we arrived for boarding we were told that boarding was delayed several hours for the extra cleaning and disinfecting. Our cruise was fine and the chain of the noro outbreak was pretty much cut off by the extended cleaning. We started out under "code red precautions" such as no self serve in buffet and by mid cruise things were back to normal. So the deep cleaning and disinfection does work. The biggest fear of recontamination is if there is a lot of noro outbreaks in the port city and the new passengers bring the germs right back on. You need more confirmation than that? LOL (They don't send emails like that lightly - they have to be pretty darn sure that people are sick before they send those emails!) LOL (They don't send emails like that lightly - they have to be pretty darn sure that people are sick before they send those emails!) We have found out through experience that sometimes THEY DO send out emails lighty, especially when sailing out of San Franciso. Every time we have sailed from there on any cruiseline, we get an email with one reason or another about why should show up at the port late. Could be traffic on the Embarcadero (?) Just went to the 'live from the Infinity' blog and no one is saying anything yet about people being sick.

Seasidesue Posted May 12, 2015 #11 Share Posted May 12, 2015 I am to be on this ship on May 15. Just informed we will have a delayed checkin, due to another outbreak of norovirus. Yes, there was the same scenario a month ago, when they had to pull into San Diego for a special enhanced cleaning. Hmmm....
Shirley C Posted May 12, 2015 #12 Share Posted May 12, 2015 We are currently on the Infinity. There are cases of Noro and Noro restrictions are in place - no salt & pepper on tables, no menus in Cafe Al Bacio, crew cleaning everywhere, and no touching sea pass cards - they write the number down. I think they are doing their best to prevent the spread. Shirley

We leave on Friday for 11 days. Hopefully those measures will only be in place a few days into our cruise.
TxnAquarian Posted May 13, 2015 #14 Share Posted May 13, 2015 I have gotten a stomach bug on every Celebrity cruise I have taken, including the Infinity - and I am a fanatic about washing hands, disinfecting everything in the room, etc. We are boarding the Infinity on June 7.....guess I'll wear a hazmat suit this time =) Michael

If you have gotten a stomach bug on EVERY Celebrity cruise you have taken, why do you keep going back? After the second incident of illness (on ANY cruiseline) in a row, I would absolutely find a new cruise line, or a new doctor.

I absolutely agree, but this person said they have gotten a stomach bug on EVERY SINGLE CELEBRITY CRUISE they have taken. That's not a "periodic bout" - that's every single cruise they have taken. It's more than a little strange - and it's possible that it has nothing to do with Noro. It may be more to do with unusual eating/drinking habits. vickie_bernie Posted May 13, 2015 #21 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Fact is you are more likely to get a gastro intestinal illness at home not on a ship. The only reason you know about it on ships is that they have to report it to the Health Control once they have more than 3% of passengers affected. Stats have said that .05% of cruise passengers get Noro each year. I think those are pretty good odds. I have never gotten it on a ship in all my cruises but have gotten it at home. This year seemed to be a very bad year, many schools, hospitals, retirement homes, daycares were hit hard. Note other lines are also affected... Star Princess is going thru a deep cleaning too. I would rather travel than be scared of getting sick. But there are steps you can take to prevent getting ill. Biggest thing is wash your hands often, the biggest way to kill germs. have a great trip

I also don't care whether or not you are criticizing a cruise line. I have no loyalty to ANY specific cruise line. I am just saying that if you get sick on EVERY Celebrity cruise, it might be time for a change. It is unlikely noro if no one else is getting sick - and it's just you. I, for one, would be dreading my next cruise if I knew I would be getting a stomach bug on vacation.
vmarq Posted May 13, 2015 #24 Share Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) I have been on many Celebrity cruises and have never had a stomach virus. In fact, I was on the March 29th Infinity that had the breakout of the norovirus and was lucky enough not to get sick. I am a health professional and I suspect the itinerary that the Infinity is doing lends itself more to passengers picking up the Norovirus on shore and bringing it back onboard the ship. Many of the Panama Canal ports are not the cleanest. I don't believe it is a problem with the ship itself. They worked very hard to keep the virus contained. I have also never gotten sick but my DH got sick on one of our New England/Canada cruises. I was shocked I didn't get it, but I bring my own Lysol Disinfectant wipes and I started wiping down the cabin as soon as he became sick. The biggest problem on our sailing was people were getting sick but Celebrity wasn't doing any thing about it. They did not put the special noro-virus procedures into effect and then the next sailing they had a huge outbreak. I was really disappointed they didn't take action immediately on our sailing when people starting coming down with the illness.
