Just called Visa re our Chase United card, and asked for a chip and pin credit card to take to Europe for our Viking Star Homelands cruise in a couple of weeks. They are sending, to arrive in a couple of days! Good to know.

We got two supposedly 'real' Chip & PIN cards (not Chip & Signature) from Navy Federal and Andrews Federal. Both took weeks and weeks to come. Interestingly, we used them both on our trip on the maiden and they both worked, but for both cards we were asked for signatures at the end of the transaction - not to enter our PINs. We probably used our cards 25 times and always they wanted a signature. Note: we did not have a need to use them in any kind of non-manned kiosk or toll booth so don't know what would have happened there. The reason we got them was the previous year when we were travelling around France in a rented car we had real problems at toll booths and un-manned gas stations with just our normal magnetic stripe cards. So this year we got the Chip & PINs.

The reason we are asked for signature is U.S.-issued EMV cards default to chip-and-signature. For unmanned kiosks where sig is not possible, the next protocol is PIN *if* PIN is an option at all.

Here is a great database of available cards and how each one works:

will let you know on return -- two day delivery seems quite astonishing. The guy did say that if you use it some places (off ship) and it doesn't go through or they don't want a pin, tell them to input the number manually!

Almost all credit cards in Canada are chip & pin. A non chip & pin requires a signature and each store has limit to what they can take. Some smaller merchants won't take non chip & pin due to the bank chargers.

An EMV chip and pin from the U.S. will default to chip and signature regardless of pin capability. In touristy areas this will rarely be a problem. Off the beaten trail, though, you can run across someone who has never seen a "sig"'request and doesn't know how to handle it (or doesn't want to be bothered). Most unmanned kiosks can churn through the protocols and since a kiosk can't ask for sig, will ask for pin instead. Humans aren't so programmed. Most places where

cruise ship passengers can reach will be fine.

Good to know. Incidentally, the new Visa cards I ordered yesterday from Chase did in fact arrive today. So - good for them, less than 24 hrs! We will be having a week in London at the end of our cruise so will see how the c and p card works there.
