Conanc Posted September 16, 2005 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2005 Just wondering which hotel we should consider -- the Hyatt or the Westin (for both hotel amenities and location). Is there a rail station to LA anywhere in downtown Long Beach? Thank you!
Rare maren91 Posted September 16, 2005 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2005 Stayed at Hyatt Long Beach, nice location and walk to great restaurants/Queen Mary. VERY comfortable beds!
Splinter Posted September 17, 2005 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2005 I would agree with the Hyatt, although it is adjacent to the Convention Center so often fully booked. You can walk to the Aquarium from there, and their restaurants are decent. It is a short walk uphill to the main drag downtown and other restaurants. There is no Amtrack station closer than downtown LA or all the way over to Irvine/Anaheim. There is a light rail commuter train (Blue Line) from downtown (you have to catch the Red Line at Union Station, then transfer), but it goes through some pretty dicey parts of LA, and has limited capacity for luggage, so I would not depend on it. You would be safer and faster taking SuperShuttle to your hotel.
Conanc Posted September 17, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted September 17, 2005 Hi Splinter, We're looking at staying at the Westin or the Hyatt post cruise and taking the commuter train into Hollywood/LA for a little bit of daytime sightseeing and then returning to Long Beach for dinner. Do you think it would be OK to take the train with no luggage during the daytime? We thought about taking the ship tour but it would drop us off at LAX only afterwards and we are staying in Long Beach (flying out of Long Beach early the next morning). Thanks! Splinter Posted September 17, 2005 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2005 Where are you from? If you are from Chicago and comfortable riding the El on the South Side or near West Side, or from NYC and comfortable riding the subway through Harlem, you would probably be OK. Personally, I don't ride that line. Maybe you should consider renting a car? Enterprise is closest to the port.
Conanc Posted September 18, 2005 Author #6 Share Posted September 18, 2005 Hi Splinter, Thanks for the info! We are from RI but our daughter lives in Chicago so we spend a lot of time in Chicago riding the el - but NOT on the south side. We don't enjoy riding a bus through Harlem never mind the subway. :) We really don't want to drive a car, maybe we'll rethink things and just hang around Long Beach. Or...do the ship excursion and take Supershuttle back to the hotel. In any case, I'll probably survive without seeing Hollywood. :) Nancy
