Info re Taxis from Airport to Hotel in Stockholm (we just went)

Recommended Posts

We just returned from our trip. We took the Arlanda Express from the airport (right downstairs in the terminal) to Central Station. I was very surprised to see how expensive it was. It was $33.30 EACH ($66.60 total). Although it was very comfortable and fast (avoided rush hour heavy traffic), we then had to pay another $20 for a taxi to go about 1 mile (however in very heavy, slow moving rush hour traffic) from Central Station to our hotel. (He did not go the direct route saying he thought we were at a different hotel. We should have printed out the hotel name and address in block letters to be sure he understood.) We heard that some other couples had arranged transportation in advance for about $60 total.

If taking a taxi in Stockholm beware of taxi scams since since taxis are unregulated. Always stick to the major vendors like Taxi 020, Taxi Kurir, Taxi Stockholm:

http://www.taxistockholm.se/en/

http://www.taxi020.se/in-english/

http://www.taxikurir.se/ (more or less nationwide in Sweden)

Always ask the driver for an estimate beforehand unless you have a prearranged rate.

Check the YELLOW STICKER on the outside of the taxi window which gives AVERAGE prices from the airport to central station (or an average 10 kilometer ride taking 15 minutes.) 300 Swedish kroner is typical (about $37 for one person as of late May 2015).

Check this site to convert Swedish krona to US dollars or google converting Swedish Krona to US dollars. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=convert%20swedish%20krona%20to%20us%20dollars

4. If in doubt, ask your accommodation about advice and booking. They usually have some kind of agreement with at least one of the major vendors.

5. Taxi Stockholm has the option to book a taxi online in English for a preagreed amount. This preagreed fare can be a bit higher depending on traffic conditions. Kurir and 020 also offer this option but not in English.

6. If all you need is transport from Arlanda airport to the center of town then consider the Arlanda Express. It was $33.30 per individual when we used it in June 2015. It is quick (avoids traffic) and comfortable but not cheaper if you then take a taxi to your hotel. It is located downstairs in the airport terminal.

The Arlanda Express does start with a special offer for the summer season from today.

2 for 300:-, 3 for 400 and 4 for 500:-

Two, three or four persons travelling together, single journey. Applies every day during June 18 - Aug 30, 2015. This discounted ticket cannot be rebooked or refunded. Can be purchased online and in our ticket vending machines, ticket counter at Stockholm Central Station and in the Information counters at Arlanda.

That is 2 for $37, 3 for $50 and 4 for $62.

I do not think that average price is for the Arlanda trip, but a comparison price. It is for 10 kilometers that takes 15 minutes for comparison.

I think the current taxi fares to Arlanda are

Taxi Stockholm and UBER at 520 SEK

Taxi 020 and Taxi Kurir at 470 SEK

Regarding taxis in stockholm, you have to always be careful and check the price beforehand. The taxis can charge what they want and some really do rob especially tourists. So check that the taxi has a prices printed or negotiate.

In finland for example taxis charge all the same but not in sweden.

We walked out of the airport terminal and picked up a taxi that advertised a fixed price to downtown....I forget the exact number but it was under 500 SEK. We were quickly taken to our hotel, the Hilton Slussem just across from the old town. I just looked at my credit card statement and it worked out of just under $60 for the two of us and our luggage. Cheaper than the Arlanda Express and by the time you work out the transfers from the train station to your hotel it was probably as quick. That was with Taxi 020. We took some other taxis during our 3 days and all of the fares were reasonable and shown on the meter. They may not be regulated but they are competitive, especially if you ask first.

Sweden finally did something about this long-standing problem and from January 1, 2015 Taxis in Sweden are regulated.

Taxis must have a sticker showing comparison pricing visible in the window. Taxi companies are now responsible for the actions of independent drivers. Taxis must give you a printed receipt of the cost of the trip when you order on the internet or when you get in the taxi.

While this is just the first step in eliminating this problem, at least they have done something moving in the right direction.

Before this new law, the only advice one could give was to take only Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir or Taxi 020.

Thanks. We arrive a week from today. So you had no problem using your credit card in the taxi? Could you add the tip?

You can add a tip to a taxi meter card paid fare, but it requires another step in the payment process.

As many drivers work as 'independent contractors' they are maybe 'tipped out' monthly for tips paid on a card. There has been discussion of companies not paying or underpaying these tips to the actual drivers.

Giving a tip in any paper currency would be fine and does not need to be Swedish Kronor. Access to 'non-commission' currency exchange is quite simple in Stockholm for these drivers and they can exchange it or use it for travel.

Coins worth more than 5 SEK can be changed from EUR, GBP, DKK och NOK in Sweden.

Hello,

Does anyone have an idea of the cost of a taxi from Stockholm Central Station (my hotel is next to the Station) to Frihamnen cruise port? We will likely need a van/larger vehicle as there will be 4 adults with probably 4 full-size pieces of luggage.

Thanks.

If you are just 4 passengers you will not have a problem in Stockholm. Many taxis are larger Volvo or Mercedes vehicles and will have no problem with 4 bags.

I would guess the fare would be between 180 SEK and 220 SEK depending on traffic. *$22-27.

You can get a fixed price for any route, Sticking with the companies Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir or Taxi020 has always been the best rule in Stockholm even though things might be changing now.
