Aloha_Jackie Posted September 16, 2005 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2005 San Diego Port Security Beefs Up Port Gets $6.5 Million POSTED: 10:49 am PDT September 16, 2005 UPDATED: 10:57 am PDT September 16, 2005 SAN DIEGO -- The Port of San Diego will get an added $6.5 million in federal funding for antiterrorism measures as part of a nationwide plan for increasing security, it was reported Friday.The grant, about half of what the port asked for in connection with 10 projects, was issued under a formula aimed at beefing up security at seaports considered at the greatest risk, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.So far, the Port of San Diego has received about $15.5 million in federal funding for security projects.The grants were announced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in Washington, D.C., Thursday.All together, $142 million in grants were awarded to 36 ports. Houston, a major oil port, was the biggest winner, receiving $35.3 million. The Port of Los Angeles was awarded $11.4 million, and next-door Long Beach got $12.8 million.
