DebJ14 Posted July 16, 2015 #101 Share Posted July 16, 2015 If you need to keep your bandage/cast or whatever they put on your ankle dry get a roll of Glad Press and Seal wrap. My son's orthopedic surgeon told us to get it after he had knee surgery so he could shower and keep the bandages dry. My Mom's foot surgeon also told me to buy it so she could shower after getting a toe amputated. Carnival will provide shower stools if you ask special needs. I used one for my Mom in a cabin with a tub. I put it in the tub for her to sit on. She dangled her foot out the side of the tub. With the shower hose I literally scrubbed her down and hosed her off and her new amputation stayed dry. The Press and Seal wrap kept it from getting wet as she got in and out of the tub and from any water on the floor. When our grandson broke his wrist we just triple wrapped his cast and his hand in the Press and Seal wrap and he was able to shower with his plaster cast. DebJ14 Posted July 16, 2015 #102 Share Posted July 16, 2015 (edited) Good news! Got a second opinion and no surgery! They will be casting it Tuesday. Hopefully I'll be good to go for the cruise with still no weight bearing. That is great news! Our health insurance REQUIRES a second opinion if surgery is recommended, unless it is an emergency. It has to be from a completely different practice. And insurance covers the second opinion 100%. Edited July 16, 2015 by DebJ14
danacline Posted July 16, 2015 #103 Share Posted July 16, 2015 I broke my ankle about 25 years ago climbing ice (well, falling after climbing ice). The ER doc said I needed surgery, but my doctor called his orthopedist and she came right over, said no surgery needed, just a little tweak - which she did as she was saying that. OUCH! I then had a cast above the knee for 4 weeks, then a cast below the knee for another 4 weeks. After 8 weeks of immobility, the learning to walk thing was the most painful thing I've ever done. I had intensive rehab, because as a skier, I insisted on regaining full mobility. And it must have worked too, as when I ski now, that ankle is about the only thing that doesn't hurt at the end of the day. Fortunately, as others have mentioned, most cruise lines take great pains to accommodate people with disabilities. Even going so far as getting a waiter to follow you through the buffet and carry your tray.

bia Posted July 17, 2015 #105 Share Posted July 17, 2015 Yeah I'm going to wait and see how my call with my HR department goes tomorrow, they've been great so far although I'm not sure how a vacation smack in the middle of my LOA will go over, and then I'll see what the Ortho says whether I need surgery or not. He ER doctor after looking at the X-rays said most likely I won't need surgery. When both those processes are done, most likely mid week this week, I'll make the decision whether to stick with my room, upgrade to the Grand Suite, or cancel all together and use my insurance. I love hearing everyone's stories so keep them coming. You guys are all amazing and uplifting. GO GO GO ON THE CRUISE wE WENT ON OUR CRUISE THREE WEEKS AFTER I BROKE MY ANKLE. WE HAD DOCTORS PERMISSION. TOOK A TRAVELING WHEEL CHAIR COULD NOT GET HANDCAPPED ROOM NONE AVAILABLE I HAD TWO SURGEYS AND PLATES, SCREWS PINS. COULD NOT GET OFF THE BOAT COULD NOT GET IT WET YET IT WAS MY BEST CRUISE. EVERYTHING WAS ACCESIBLE TO ME. BATHROOMS TABLES AND OF COURSE THE CASINO. ALL THE SHOWS. MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR A SHOWER SEAT., THAT WAS A BIG HELP. JUST STUCK MY FOOT OUT OF SHOWER AND WAS CLEANED.
jfried8 Posted July 17, 2015 Author #106 Share Posted July 17, 2015 So while the doctor suggested surgery, he was okay with me saying I just wanted to cast it. He said long term I may get arthritis but I chose to take the risk. We are going and I'm so excited!
