Ideas on what to do on Grand Bahamas Island?

Never been, not really interested in the cruise ship excursions or going out on a boat snorkeling and stuff. What other things have people done around the port? Are there taxis to take you places on your own? Public beach? shops?

Also is Grand Bahamas island actually called Freeport? Is that the port NCL docks at?

If anyone cares to share things they have done at this stop I would be more then happy to read the stories as it might give me an idea of something I would like to do also. At this moment we are lost lol and a starting point would be nice :)

Thanks

The port area is more built up now so there are shops and dining . . . other than that you would have to take a taxi to Port Lucaya or Taino Beach.

Last trip, me and DW were offered to do a 90 minute presentation at Memories all inclusive resort (right next to Grand Lucaya) and then given access to the property. We had a blast and everything was free, including the transportation. This was on the Grand Celebration out of Palm Beach . . . not sure if other cruise lines are partnering with them for tours. Spent like 5.5 hours on property . . . did not want to leave.

We have also just taken a taxi to Port Lucaya, enjoyed the free beach and then did some shopping/eating at the Marketplace. Taxi prices have gone up though as I think they are around $15 to $20 p/p RT (when we went it was only $10) but we had a good time. Grand Lucayan hotel does day passes for like $15 but we didn't do that.

Are there shared shuttles at the port to Port Lucaya? Like $5pp or something $105-140 for 7 of us seems somewhat pricey for a 20ish minute ride

  • 5 months later...

Just returned from a cruise and ported at Freeport.

We took the taxi to Port Lucaya ($10 round trip). We got dropped off at Treasure Bay casino. We only had about 90 minutes due to late start and an early (1:30) sail away.

So of our party went across the street to the shops and the rest of us walk back down the sidewalk to the entrance to the free beach.

When we got the ocean, I was first taken back by the lack of no beach. But no fear, make a left and walk over some rocks and there it was. Reality, it is the beach in front of all the resorts (Memories, Grand Lucayan). Only you do not have access to restrooms. Beach and water were wonderful.

If we go back and have a longer time, I would either get a day pass at Gran Lucayan or take a little longer trip up to Train beach and go to the Jankanoo Beach club for $3 entrance.
